Deep Fusion is Apple’s camera technology designed to add detail to a clicked photo on iPhone. The Deep Fusion Camera feature is currently only available on the latest phones, such as the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max, but unlike many other new camera features on these iPhones, such as the ultra-wide-angle lens, zoom lens, or night mode, how to use the Deep Fusion camera ?
Here, things get a little more interesting because Deep Fusion differs from other iPhone camera features.
Instead of having a button or option to enable Deep Fusion on the iPhone 11, Apple has designed Deep Fusion to happen automatically when it’s optimal, without user intervention.

Using a Deep Fusion Camera on iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro
According to Apple, Deep Fusion mode becomes active when the standard camera lens is used in a medium or brightly lit environment.
Similarly, a telephoto lens uses Deep Fusion mode only when the subject is very brightly lit.
The ultra-wide-angle lens does not currently use Deep Fusion at all, regardless of the lighting conditions.
So if you want to use Deep Fusion on iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, make sure you use the 1x camera in a well-lit environment, such as a very bright room, or outdoors in daylight. Likewise, you can use the 2x camera in very bright environments, and Deep Fusion should also be enabled.
Thus, the key to using Deep Fusion is lighting, as with many other aspects of photography.
Why are there no indicators that Deep Fusion is enabled on the iPhone 11?
Apple apparently told Theverge.com that nowhere is there an appropriate indicator of iPhone cameras using Deep Fusion technology because they don’t want people to think they’re getting the best picture, but prefer people to just take pictures naturally and let the iPhone camera determine what details and blending technology are best used.
This has a side effect, so the challenge is really to find out if Deep Fusion technology has been used in the photo at all or not. But in general, if the camera was used in a bright environment and the image appears to have very detailed details, it may be a good guess that Deep Fusion was used to improve the appearance of the photographs.
Plus, you may not even see any references to Deep Fusion in EXIF and metadata for photos clicked on the iPhone camera (this deceives some of us in photo and data viewers, but it makes sense for the purpose of the feature).
What is Deep Fusion? And how does it still work?
When Apple launched the iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and iPhone 11 and spent keynote time on device cameras, they discussed Deep Fusion and a little about how it works.
In short, in the right lighting situation, the iPhone 11 camera clicks a series of nine images of the same scene, and then Deep Fusion uses machine learning to determine which of the photo combinations produces the sharpest and best possible image. This can mean that the components of these nine photographs are mixed for the best possible resolution and image quality.
Deep Fusion is actually a pretty great camera technology, and presumably it will move to all future iPhone models and move forward over time and iPhone cameras will become more complex and capable.
What do Deep Fusion photos look like?
A photo clicked on the iPhone using Deep Fusion technology should basically show more detailed details with better and more realistic lighting, including highlights and shadows.
Here is an example image taken on an iPhone 11 Pro where Deep Fusion was apparently active, the image is a relative close-up of an animal’s fur and as you can see, it is very detailed (click to enlarge)
As you can see, the photo is very detailed, and despite the fact that the photo is compressed in a web-friendly JPEG format with lower resolution. In other words, the actual raw photo looks even sharper, sharper and better than that example!
Because Deep Fusion photos aren’t tagged in EXIF or metadata, it can be challenging to figure out exactly which ones use camera technology, but if the photo looks particularly good and sharp, it’s a good bet that it was clicked with Deep Fusion on an iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, or iPhone 11 Pro Max.
