You’ve probably heard of FreeSync and maybe seen it compared to G-Sync and VSync. These are basically all solutions to the same problem, but the different terms can quickly get confusing. AMD FreeSync and its new Premium and Premium Pro versions will be the focus of this article. Before taking a closer look at what these different incarnations of FreeSync bring to the table and what the differences are, it’s important to understand the problem they’re trying to fix, as well as other potential solutions. This problem is the dreaded screen tearing. AMD has responded to NVIDIA’s G-Sync variable refresh rate technology with FreeSync.

While Basic FreeSync eliminates screen tearing at lower refresh rates of around 60Hz, FreeSync Premium expects a refresh rate of 120Hz or higher at 1080p. It also enables Low Frame Rate Compensation (LFC), a technology that allows the monitor to double frames to compensate for drops in performance.

This implementation specifically targets HDR (high dynamic range) games that require tone mapping to display properly. By sending information back to the computer that controls the display, latency is reduced by eliminating the steps required to prepare the HDR image. The Premium Pro implementation of FreeSync also includes LFC for smoother gameplay. While FreeSync Standard and FreeSync Premium should work with all content, FreeSync Premium Pro is supported on a game-by-game basis.
