Xiaomi 13 Pro review (2023) a smartphone with high-quality glass

The Xiaomi 13 Pro is a beautiful glass smartphone with a new camera housing on the back.

The Xiaomi 13 Pro, the company’s newest flagship, is a chance for everyone to own an even better and more refined Ultra. In fact, the flagship Xiaomi 13 duo is now available around the world, and the premium mid-range Xiaomi 13 Lite is also coming along for the ride. The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset is only in a few phones, including the Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro you can buy this smartphone directly from Xiaomi’s website.

Xiaomi 13 Pro: Description

But while the Xiaomi 13 is a small phone with a fairly average camera, the Xiaomi 13 Pro is better in every way, including the camera. The Xiaomi 13 Pro is a beautiful glass phone with a new camera housing on the back. This camera housing is likely to become a trademark for the next generation of Xiaomi phones. It has the same 6.73-inch LTPO QHD OLED panel as the Xiaomi 12 Pro and 12S Ultra.

But the maximum brightness has gone up, even though the resolution, colors, refresh rate, and HDR capabilities have stayed the same. Then there’s the new chipset, which is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and is part of the Xiaomi 13 Pro. It improves performance and comes with faster RAM and storage chips.

Xiaomi 13 Pro review

Xiaomi made the 13 Pro with high-end materials like ceramic, and when you pick it up, you can feel its subtle elegance. The phone comes in two colors: Ceramic White and Ceramic Black. I was sent the Ceramic Black version so I could review it. The back panel does attract smudges because it has a finish that is too shiny. With a weight of 228 grammes and a depth of 8.33 millimeters, the phone is a bit on the heavy side.

Still, everything else about the device is very nice, from the elegant curves on the sides to the slit-like volume rocker and power buttons that fit into the small space on the edges. The three cameras and the Leica logo are set up in a way that makes them stick out of the frame. On the bottom, there is a speaker grille, a slot for two SIM cards, and a USB Type-C charging port. The phone has an IP68 rating, which means it can handle water and dust.

The 13 Pro is also great at making sure that any visual content you watch on it looks great. A curved WQHD+ (3,200 x 1,440) AMOLED screen that can refresh at 120Hz is included. Xiaomi uses the newest LTPO 3.0 technology, which lets the screen refresh at a rate as low as 1Hz when it’s not being used. Corning’s latest Gorilla Glass Victus is used to keep the screen from breaking and protect the phone.

The panel itself can show more than 1 billion colors in the DCI-P3 gamut and can get as bright as 1,900nits at its brightest. The Xiaomi 13 Pro is certified to work with both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ standards for OTT and media output. Our Universe on Netflix is a pretty good way to test a smartphone’s dynamic range and color options. I’m happy to say that the 13 Pro does very well on the test.

Xiaomi 13 Pro: Cameras

Xiaomi 13 Pro review

The best thing about the Xiaomi 13 Pro is without a doubt the optical hardware it has. At its core, it’s still the same triple-camera setup from last year, with each camera having a 50MP resolution. The quality and size of two of the sensors, on the other hand, have gotten a lot better. First of all, the main camera uses the same Sony IMX989 1-inch sensor that was used in last year’s Xiaomi 12S Ultra.

There is also a new 50MP telephoto camera that can also take macro photos, as well as a 50MP ultra-wide sensor with a field of view of 115 degrees. Leica, a German camera company, has teamed up with Xiaomi to help make the 13 Pro’s image processing pipeline. Let’s look at a few photos to see if the Xiaomi 13 Pro’s camera is really as good as the Chinese company says it is.

Before analysing any of the photos, the first thing to know is that the phone takes pictures in two LUTs: Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant. I’ve posted two photos above that were taken in both modes, and you can see that the difference in colours and saturation levels is small.

Xiaomi 13 Pro: Performance

Xiaomi 13 Pro review

The Xiaomi 13 Pro has the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, which fixes one of the Xiaomi 12 Pro’s biggest problems. The new-generation chipset is much more stable, and there were almost no signs that it was getting hot. To be clear, I used the Xiaomi 13 Pro with the highest settings, which are 120Hz refresh rate, WQHD+, and always on display. Only when I used the “boost charging speed” did I notice signs of overheating.

The Xiaomi 13 Pro scored 1,452 points on the single-core test and 4,884 points on the multi-core test. This is much better than the Xiaomi 12 Pro, which got 1,210 and 3,546 points with its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. The phone got “maxed out” scores on 3DMark’s one-minute Wild Life GPU test, and the app suggested a harder Wild Life test. During the test, the average fps was between 43 and 83, which is a great score.

Xiaomi 13 Pro: Battery Life

Xiaomi 13 Pro review

The new Xiaomi 13 Pro still has fast charging with 120W, but the battery has grown from 4600mAh to 4820mAh. During my review, the Xiaomi 13 Pro easily lasted a full day with all of its settings on the highest level. When testing the camera was really hard, the Xiaomi 13 Pro lasted about 14 to 15 hours, which is also pretty good.

In terms of charging speed, the Xiaomi 13 Pro took about 22 minutes to fully charge with the 120W charger that came with it and boost charging speed turned on. The phone also supports fast charging at 50W, but you need a special charger to do that. There is also support for wireless charging in the opposite direction, which could be very useful in some rare situations.

Final Words

The Xiaomi 13 Pro is a great top-of-the-line phone. But I still think it’s not as good as the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The camera module doesn’t do as much as it could. The style is a little old (but very neat). And there is a lot of useless software that makes it hard to use. But other than that, this phone has a lot of good things about it.

The 120Hz QHD+ OLED display is very well set up for watching movies and other videos. The triple camera module isn’t the best on the market, but the 50.3 MP main lens and 1-inch sensor do a great job during the day, and the Leica Authentic mode makes photos taken with the Xiaomi 13 Pro stand out. The Xiaomi 13 Pro has a better update policy, which is getting closer and closer to that of Samsung.

FAQs

Does Xiaomi 13 have a good camera?

We think Xiaomi did a great job improving the camera, and the photos taken at night are some of the best we’ve ever seen on a phone.

Which camera is better Xiaomi or iPhone?

The two models’ wide-angle lenses almost have the same colour preferences as their main cameras. The colours on the Xiaomi model are still bright and highly saturated, while the colours on the iPhone are still more accurate. And neither of them had much fringing, which is better than the wide-angle lenses on most phones.
