Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro+ review (2023) with premium design

an IP53-rated dual-glass smartphone

Models of the Redmi Note 12 were sent to markets outside of China. Three of them can connect to 5G networks. Two of them are called “Pro,” which means they have extra features. One Note to rule them all: the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro+, which is the best of the bunch. This story has a happy ending, so don’t worry. Unlike the Redmi Note 11 series, which mostly brought downgrades and disappointing performance, the Redmi Note 12 models will gladly fix this. And we’re starting with the most powerful model, the Redmi Note 12 Pro+.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro+: Description

Its 200MP camera, 120W fast charging, and all-around Dolby features will go down in history. Okay, enough with the jokes. The 6.67-inch OLED screen on the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ has 120Hz refresh rate and Dolby Vision. The Dolby package is finished off with a pair of Dolby Atmos speakers. The new model runs on the Dimensity 1080 platform, which is an improvement over the Dimensity 920 platform in the 11 Pro+. And the base model now has 8GB of RAM instead of 6GB. Even better, the battery life has gotten better, and the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ now has a 5,000mAh battery instead of 4,500mAh.

The phone has one of the fastest ways to charge: 120W HyperCharge, which has already been shown to charge the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ and other Xiaomi phones at a speed that will blow your mind. One of the biggest changes this year is in the main camera, which is one of the most important cameras. Now, the best Redmi Note 12 model has a 200MP Samsung sensor, so it can take photos and videos that are better than anything else in its class.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro+: Design and Build

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro+ review

The Note 12 Pro+ has a sleek, high-end design that makes it look like a device that costs twice as much. It starts with the materials Xiaomi chose. The sides are made of plastic, but the front and back are made of glass. The latter is a nice surprise, since it’s not something that most mid-range phones have. A matte coating keeps fingerprints from sticking to the phone and lets the light catch it in a pretty way.

That’s especially clear in photos of the “Iceberg Blue” model, but it’s also true of the “Arctic White” and “Obsidian Black” versions. Even though the back of the 12 Pro+ doesn’t have Gorilla Glass, it feels very durable and easy to hold. In the box is a clear silicone case, but you might not need it. But the IP53 rating is a little bit of a letdown. It protects against dust, but it doesn’t protect against submersion in water like IP68 flagships do.

On the back of the phone, you can see the Redmi logo and some information about CE, but the camera module takes up most of the space. It has three lenses and a flash, which makes the small bump easy to understand. But we wouldn’t say the camera module is ugly, but it’s also not the most beautiful. On one side, you’ll find one of the phone’s biggest flaws, but it’s not the plastic. The 12 Pro+ doesn’t have a fingerprint sensor in the screen. Instead, it has one built into the power button. It has a smaller target area, but it is still very reliable and usually works faster to unlock the phone.

Display and Speakers

The display looks great, the 120Hz refresh rate makes swiping around the OS feel smooth and quick, and the colors are bright and lively, as we’ve come to expect from an AMOLED panel. It has a flat front, so there are no strange reflections on the edges and a lot less accidental taps, which is just how we like it. It works with Dolby Vision and HDR10+, and you can choose to show colors in either sRGB or DCI-P3. There are a lot of ways to change the colors in the settings, so it’s easy to make it fit your tastes.

The speakers are very clear and loud, which makes them very impressive. They’re not quite as good as the best we’ve heard, but they’re well above average, and the way they’re set up in stereo makes for some nice positioning. This phone has both a headphone jack and Bluetooth 5.2, so if you want to improve the sound quality even more, you have plenty of options.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro+: Camera

The three cameras are a 200MP Samsung ISOCELL HPX sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, and a 2MP macro camera. First, I’ll talk about daytime photos. I took them with the Note 12 Pro+ in a variety of lighting conditions and difficult places. The phone’s ability to take pictures almost always amazed me. The camera was best at capturing details and sharpness in every shot, and it also liked to play around with the dynamic range. We did notice, though, that the color temperature was a little bit cooler when the sensor was pointed straight at the blue sky in the morning.

This problem goes away when you take close-up pictures or shoot inside, but it’s still important to remember. Exposure levels are kept at different levels, but the end result is always good. Normal photos are taken at a pixel-binned 12.5MP resolution, and you have to go into the camera settings to use the full power of the 200MP sensor. Even then, the first option you see is 50MP, and you have to tap in the corner to get the full resolution. When taking 200MP photos, it’s important to have good lighting because the exposure and dynamic range suffer.

Performance and Software

The MediaTek Dimensity 1080 CPU that powers the Note 12 Pro+ might sound new, but the octa-core chip isn’t much different from the Dimensity 920 found in Chinese versions of the old Redmi Note 11 Pro. It now works with 200MP camera sensors, which is kind of important since that’s what this phone is for. It’s also a little bit faster, but that’s about it.

It’s a mid-range chip, but it’s not bad, and the 8GB of RAM that comes with it should be fine for most uses. If you have a lot of money, you can get a version with 12GB of RAM, but both have the same 256GB of storage. We had no problems swiping through Android home screens, opening apps, or loading web pages. However, the on-screen keyboard took a fraction of a second longer to appear than on a more expensive phone, and the animations weren’t always smooth when switching between apps quickly.

There’s enough power for casual and 2D games, but while 3D games will run without much trouble, frame rates won’t be as fast as they are on phones with Snapdragon chips that cost the same or less. Expect to turn down the details to make the experience smoother.

Battery and Charging

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro+ review

The battery on the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ is 5,000mAh. That’s about average for a modern smartphone, and it means the battery life is good but not amazing. On PCMark’s battery test, with the brightness set to 200 nits, we got an exact reading of 11 hours. That tries to simulate how people use computers in the real world by simulating common tasks, but you won’t be able to get close in terms of actual screen time.

The only time this might not be true is when you are playing games, where a few hours of playing a demanding game will drain the battery much more quickly. But because it can be charged quickly, running out of power is much less of a problem. Xiaomi says that a full charge takes 19 minutes, but with the 120W adapter that comes in the box, you can get to 58% in 15 minutes and 100% in less than half an hour. Most people will be able to plug in their phone when they wake up and have it fully charged before they have to leave the house.

Final Words

The Redmi Note 12 Pro+ is a great phone for the price. At this price point, 120W charging and a 120Hz screen are pretty rare, and a 200MP camera is unheard of. We are not sure if the 200MP camera really lives up to the hype, though. Don’t get us wrong, it’s a great camera, but we don’t think it’s that much better than the IMX766 on the cheaper Pro model.

There are a lot of bloatware apps and the usual Xiaomi software quirks, which takes away from the premium look of the rest of the device. Still, it’s a cheap phone that takes great photos, has a great screen and speakers, and works quickly in everyday situations. As long as you don’t expect too much from the Redmi Note 12 Pro+’s camera, we think you’ll have a great time with it.

FAQs

Is redmi Note 12 Pro Plus waterproof?

The Redmi Note 12 Pro has an IP53 rating, which means it can stand up to dust and light splashes. This is something that most Redmi and Poco phones have. Even though it’s not completely waterproof, it’s better than nothing, and we appreciate that.

What is the difference between 12 and 12 Pro Xiaomi?

The standard Xiaomi 12 has a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 5-megapixel macro. In contrast, the Pro version has three 50-megapixel sensors: one wide angle, one ultrawide, and one telephoto with 2x optical zoom.
