5 Ways to avoid getting scammed online

Hi everyone, this article is about how to avoid getting scammed online. Every year, millions of consumers become victims of cybercrime. According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, consumers lost more than $1 billion to online scams in 2015. In celebration of June, Internet Safety Month, here are seven tips to help consumers protect themselves from online scams.

Anyone can become a victim of online crime, but older adults tend to be more vulnerable. According to the IC3, nearly 40% of all cybercrime victims are over the age of 50. Unfortunately, this group also includes the majority of victims who lose more than $100,000. We don’t expect you or your loved ones to disconnect from the Internet, but we do want you to stay safe online. So familiarize yourself with these common Internet scams and the proactive steps you can take to avoid them.

How to avoid from getting scammed online

Use only smart, vetted apps

Mobile apps are ideal for quick access to a variety of services. But not all apps are safe like rated web browsers, certified online payment platforms. So pay attention to the apps you download on your phone and make sure they are genuine and verified. Established fintech companies are developing countermeasures to prevent banking fraud through smartphone apps in India.

Visit only secure and authorized websites

No matter how professional a website looks, people should not make online payments unless they are sure it is genuine. Customers should completely avoid insecure websites and only browse websites that include “https://” before the “www” and the domain name in the URL. Beware of fake websites whose domain names are similar or sound similar to well-known and popular brand websites.

Be vigilant when using the card

You should never let your card out of your sight when using it to pay at a store, restaurant or for home delivery. Check if the card-reading POS device is genuine or if it is a disguised card skimmer that steals all the data to steal your hard-earned money. Enable the option for international transactions only when abroad, as it eliminates the two-step verification required for payments in India.

If you have any doubts: Google it

When in doubt, search the product name or download the image and do Google image search. That way, you’re likely to find the original source. If the product really exists – as with this CG baby shark that a company used as an advertisement for their alleged baby shark robot toy – you can either pay the original artist for their hard work or take a chance and try to get the knockoff.

The search will also reveal if there are several alleged companies selling the same “unique” and “exclusive” items with the exact same images. Once you start seeing duplicate or more, that’s a warning sign.

Too new to trust

In some cases, the business is so new that you can’t find a track record. This is a red flag. It’s probably one of those companies that ceases operations once they’ve received enough orders, and then sets up a new name and domain to repeat the whole thing.

There is a possibility that it is a legitimate new company trying to set up store during a pandemic. To tell if it is a legitimate new business or a rogue one, follow some of the steps below to evaluate it.
