Even though this software is almost bug-free, it isn’t 100% bug-proof like every other app. The “Audacity Error code -9999” is one of the annoying bugs in Audacity. “Unexpected Host Error” is often the error message that comes after this problem.

Audacity is a popular digital audio editor and recording programme that you can use for free. But people who use it on a Windows PC have said that they get an error message that says “Audacity Error opening recording device, 9999 Unexpected host error.” If you’re having trouble with this, this post will help.

On a Windows PC, the problem shows up when you try to record something. Like any other problem, this one can be solved with a few simple steps. Let’s look at them one by one.

Steps to Fix Audacity Error Code 9999

Audacity Error Code 9999

Run the Recording Audio Troubleshooter

  1. Start the Run accessory, which is quickly accessible with the Windows logo + R hotkey.
  2. Enter Control Panel in Run’s command text box and select OK.
  3. To see all Control Panel items, click the Large icons option that’s on the View by menu.
  4. Select Troubleshooting to open up that applet.
  5. Click View all to see the full list of troubleshooting tools.
  6. Select Recording Audio to bring up that troubleshooter.
  7. Then press Next to start the Recording Audio troubleshooting.

Allow apps to access the Microphone

  1. First of all, press the Windows key+I keys together.
  2. Then, click on the “Privacy” settings to access it.
  3. Next, click on the “Microphone” on the left-hand side.
  4. Under the ‘Microphone access for this device’ settings click on the “Change“. Toggle it to “ON“.
  5. Then scroll down to ‘Allow desktop apps to access your microphone’  settings.
  6. Here, toggle this setting to “ON“.

This will turn on the microphone access for the computer.

Reinstall the Microphone Driver

  1. Bring up Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting a shortcut for that utility on the Power User menu.
  2. Then double-click the Audio inputs and outputs category to view sound devices.
  3. Right-click your microphone and select Uninstalldevice.
  4. Click the confirmation dialog’s Uninstall option.
  5. Select Action > Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the microphone driver.

Set the microphone as default device

  • Press the Windows key+R to open up the “Run“.
  • After that, type “mmsys.cpl” and click on “OK“.
  • Then, when the Sound window opens up, click on the “Recording“ tab.
  • Next, right-click on the microphone you are using and click on “Set as default device“.

This should set the device as the default audio driver on your computer/laptop.

Disable Third-Party Antivirus Shields

Audacity could also have problems with other third-party antivirus programmes. If you have a third-party antivirus software installed on Windows 11 or 10, try turning off its shield before you run Audacity. Most of the time, you can do this by right-clicking on the antivirus tool’s icon in the system tray and choosing a way to turn off its shield from the menu that appears.

But some antivirus programmes have special features that keep an eye on microphones. This can stop certain apps from using the mic. Bitdefender has a setting called “Microphone monitor” that does this. Even if you turn off the shield on your antivirus programme, this kind of microphone security feature might still be on. So, look through the tabs of your security software to see if there are any settings that could affect microphone access, and if there are, turn them off.

Quit the Skype

  • Close the Skype application.
  • To finally close the app, click on the arrowhead on the taskbar. Then, right-click on the Skype icon and click on “Quit Skype” to close the app.

Reinstall Audacity

If none of the other possible solutions for error 9999 work, the last thing you can do is reinstall Audacity. In this case, the files in that app might be broken or missing. You can get rid of Audacity using the first method in our guide to getting rid of software in Windows, which is to use the Control Panel.

Click the button that says “Download for Windows.” Double-click the audacity-win-3.2.4-x64.exe file in the folder where it is in Windows File Explorer. Then you can use the setup wizard to put Audacity back on your computer.

If you’ve tried all of these solutions and still doesn’t work right, you should go to Microsoft official support website to learn more.

What is Audacity Error code 9999?

Error code 9999 is thrown by Audacity. When we tried to record something on the app, we got an unexpected host error. There are many reasons why the culprit did what they did. The ones below are some of the most common.

  1. If Audacity can’t use the Microphone, the problem in the question will happen.
  2. If you have any other audio recording software running in the background, you will probably run into this problem.
  3. Different anti-virus programmes from outside sources can make it hard for Audacity to work properly.

Does Audacity have a limit?

Even on 32-bit machines, Audacity stores samples as 64-bit values. Because of this, there is no inherent 32-bit limit that says recordings can’t be longer than 231 samples (which is for example just over 13.5 hours at 44,100 Hz sample rate).

Is Audacity copyrighted?

The word “Audacity” is a trademarked name. Google, Inc. owns the trademark for the Google logo. The GNU General Public License, Version 3, sets out the rules for the software Audacity.
