How to Enable Auto Update for MacOS System Software: A Step-by-Step Guide

Do you want your Mac to update its system software automatically? This guide will show you how to enable auto updates for MacOS system software. By enabling this feature, your Mac will check for new updates, download them, and install them automatically.

However, it’s important to note that enabling automatic updates is recommended only if you have Time Machine backups enabled as well. This ensures that you have a backup in case something goes wrong during the update process.

1. Go to System Preferences

Click on the  Apple menu and select System Preferences.

2. Select the Software Update Preferences Panel

In the System Preferences window, select the Software Update preferences panel.

3. Choose Your Update Preferences

To update both MacOS system software and Mac App Store applications automatically:

  1. Check the “Keep my Mac up to date automatically” checkbox.

To update only MacOS system software and security updates:

  1. Click on the Advanced button.
  2. Check the following checkboxes: “Check for updates,” “Download new updates when they’re available,” “Install macOS updates,” and “Install system security updates.”

4. Exit System Preferences

Once you’ve selected your update preferences, close the System Preferences window.

Now, your Mac will regularly check for new system software updates and install them automatically. The updates will be downloaded and installed at a convenient time, such as during the night or when the computer is not in use.

You can still manually check for updates even with automatic updates enabled, although it is less necessary with this feature enabled.

Note: You can also enable automatic updates for Mac App Store applications in the same settings if desired. However, this guide focuses on enabling automatic updates for MacOS system software.

Automatic system updates require an internet connection. If your Mac is not connected to the internet, the updates won’t work.
