Without headphones, you have to rely on your Mac’s built-in microphone and speakers. Either way, getting your Mac to work (and talk) is easy. To use your Mac for phone calls, you must be signed in to iCloud and FaceTime with the same Apple ID on both your Mac and iPhone. And both devices must be connected to the same network. A Bluetooth connection is not required.

How to make a phone call from your Mac

  • Make sure you have the correct software: You must be running at least iOS 8 on your iPhone.
  • Sign in to both your iPhone and Mac on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • On your iPhone, go to Settings > iPhone > Calls on other devices and choose the devices you can allow calls on.
  • On your Mac, open FaceTime and choose FaceTime > Preferences and make sure ‘Calls from iPhone’ is selected
  • Make a call using Contacts: You can Contacts (find Contacts in Spotlight by pressing Cmd+Space, then start typing Contacts) Click Call to place the call.
  • Make a call from Spotlight: You can simply start typing the name of the person you want to call directly into Spotlight and make the call from there. As before, click on the phone icon which will appear whenever there is a number associated with the contact you have chosen. Make a call using FaceTime: Open FaceTime > Click Audio > Click the phone to make the call.
  • Make a call from Safari: If you’ve found a number on the Internet, you can easily make a call just by clicking it. The number will be recognized as a link that you can click to make a call, or when you hover over the number, you should see a down arrow appear that you can click to make the call. If this down arrow doesn’t appear automatically, highlight the number and it should. Click the down arrow and choose to call the number.
  • You can also make calls using Mail and Maps and Messages (in Messages just click Details at the top of a message thread with your contact and choose the phone to call them.
