Apple gives you the option in iOS 15 to stick with the old Safari tab style or adopt the new tab bar. But before you run out of the new, try it. Not that the redesigned tab bar in Safari for iOS 15 has some much better features than before everywhere. It has a new way of moving between locations, but what it really has is a different approach, an unknown layout.

Apple wants tabs to stay out of the way, and that’s commendable. It’s more than commendable that Apple has brought the new Tab Groups feature to iOS 15, it’s brilliant and different. Everyone either loves tab groups or just has no reason to know they’re there. While no one can use Safari without using tabs, a major overhaul is a very big and unavoidable thing. Or it took until Apple introduced the option to go back to the previous design.

How to change the style of the Safari tab bar on iPad

Steps to switch between compact and separate tab bar styles

  • Open the Settings app on your iPad.
  • Scroll down until you see Safari in the left sidebar and tap on it.
  • Then scroll down the right pane. Under Tabs, you will now see the option to switch between the compact tab bar and the separate tab bar. Select the one you want to use and you’re done.

How both styles will look on your iPad

Compact tab bar

The compact tab bar layout takes up space right next to the address bar and squeezes in the extra space to display more tabs than the user may have open. While this layout looks a bit more organized, many iPad users didn’t like it either.

Separate tab bar

The separate tab bar style, on the other hand, is quite similar to the older design that users of Safari browsers are familiar with. It gives the address bar back its space at the top and dedicates a section below it for all the tabs. Here, users can quickly click on the tabs they want to get back to what they were doing.
