Check How to Control Android Phone with Facial Expressions

Giving another boost to Android’s accessibility tricks, Google has introduced a new feature that allows users to control their phone using facial expressions, such as smiling, raising eyebrows, and moving their eyes. Android already offers a ton of accessibility features like voice access for contactless control, action blocks to quickly perform a specific task, hearing aid support, and live transcription, to name a few.

These accessibility settings are built in at the operating system level as part of the Android accessibility suite or are available as dedicated apps. One such app is called ‘Look to Speak’, which relies on gaze tracking to perform tasks for users with motor and speech disabilities. In addition to Android, Google has also been porting some of these accessibility features to Chrome OS to make the remote learning process easier for students.

How to set up facial gestures for your Android smartphone

  • Go to Settings > System > Accessibility.
  • Select Switch Access and enable the Use Switch Access option.
  • You will see a message asking you to provide full control of the functions of your device, including viewing and controlling your screen and performing actions. Tap Allow.
  • Select the type of switch and choose the number of switches
    • If you’re setting this up for the first time, you should see a Switch Accessibility Setup Guide. To set up custom gesture controls, you’ll first need to choose a switch type. You will see three options:
    • USB switch, which allows a switch to be physically connected via USB
    • Bluetooth switch, which allows a switch to pair wirelessly via Bluetooth
    • Camera switch, which uses facial gestures as switches
  • To turn on facial gestures, select Camera Switch.
    • When choosing the type of switch, you must choose the number of switches. It is recommended to choose the Two Switches option.
  • Choose a scan gesture
    • Linear Scan: allows you to move between elements one at a time
    • Scan rows and columns: allows you to scan one row at a time and move through the elements after selecting a row
    • Group selection: all items will be assigned colors and you have to make facial gestures that correspond to the color of the item you want to select
  • Configure your gestures
  • Next, you need to assign a gesture to each specific action. Gestures include Open Mouth, Smile, Raise Eyebrows, Look Left, Look Right, and Look Up.
  • Tap Next and Previous to go back and forth between different gestures if you change your mind about wanting to change a particular association of gestures and actions.
  • Manage camera switch settings
    • Once you’ve mapped these actions to your preferred gestures, the final step is to adjust the camera switch settings.
    • Here you will see a list of all the gestures that were mentioned before.
    • Click on each gesture to see a preview of your face. You can now set the size of the gesture on a scale from 0 to 8.
    • Select the sensitivity of each gesture along with the duration of the gesture.
