Creating a Windows 10 Bootable USB on Linux

In general, there are two ways to do this. In the first method, you can create a UEFI-compliant boot disk. The first thing we need, even before we start the installation, is a Windows ISO file. To do this, go to the official Windows 10 download page and get the file from there.

Mount the ISO file on your USB stick

  • Now that you have the ISO file with you, all you need to do now is mount the Windows .iso file on your USB drive. However, before doing that, it is better to format your USB stick first. Insert the USB stick into your PC. Then go to the search menu, type ‘discs’ and select the best match.
    • In the disk tool, right-click on your USB drive and select Format Disk…
    • Choose any of the partition schemes and press Format…
    • Your USB will be formatted in a few seconds.
  • Right click on the previously downloaded ISO file and select ‘Open with another application’. In the list of applications, select Disk Image Mounter. This will mount the ISO file. If you can’t find it, click Other Locations and you’ll see the contents of the ISO file.
  • Copy all the files from there and paste them to the USB stick. Finally, you have a bootable Windows 10 USB stick with you. From here on out, the process is pretty straightforward. Insert the USB stick into your PC, restart your PC and boot from the USB stick to continue with the installation.
