Defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella in Elden Ring

In this article we will teach you how to beat Malenia, Blade of Miquella in Elden Ring. Elden Ring is a dark fantasy action game and role playing game (RPG) from FromSoftware, creators of the hugely popular Dark Souls series. It quickly rocketed to the top of many “most anticipated” lists after its reveal at E3 2019, largely due to the involvement of Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin. Yes, instead of completing The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, Martin did some video game work – much to the chagrin of book nerds everywhere.

Elden Ring has some of the coolest, but also toughest, bosses in recent gaming history. Players new to the Souls genre will be tearing their hair out here, but some bosses can be stressful even for seasoned Souls fans. One of these bosses is Malenia, Miquella’s sword. She quickly gained notoriety in the community, and with good reason, as she is by far the toughest boss in the Elden Ring.

To prevent you from biting your controller in anger, we will explain everything you need to know about the boss fight with Malenia. Below we have mention the steps to defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella in Elden Ring.

How to Defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella in Elden Ring

Skip the Malenia Waterfowl Dance

The Waterfowl Dance is by far Malenia’s most dangerous attack. As it begins, Melania jumps into the air and floats for a second with her sword at the ready. If she isn’t out of range or doesn’t know exactly what to do next then she’s already dead.

Your first option is to run. The waterfowl dance covers a large area, but it’s quite possible to get far enough away that Malenia can’t catch you. However, you should already have a certain distance or start running immediately when she jumps. Immediately here really means immediately. If you’re in an attack, spin, or heal animation when the waterfowl dance starts, you won’t have time to run.

This brings us to our next option: break through the attack. If it is possible. The trick is to roll towards Melania and run under her when she starts swinging. Wait until the moment she launches and roll under her to avoid the first part of the attack. However, two more attacks will follow, in which you will also have to walk past her. If you try to move away from Melania or perpendicular to her, you will get caught by secondary hits when you exit the roll. The only way out is through the passage.

Finally, it is possible to block the dancing of waterfowl. However, aside from a possible maximum resistance and a new game + build, this is not possible without the ability Barricade Shield. The attack hits nearly a dozen times and will deplete your stamina bar and break your block without the added durability of Barricade Shield. Also, Malenia’s heal makes it hard to recommend blocking, as she recovers health every time she hits your shield. Still, it’s an option to consider if the first two methods don’t work.

Learn to Read Malenia’s grip

Malenia’s grab attack isn’t as threatening as Waterbird Dance, but that’s no different with Elden Ring. However, it can and will deal a hit to builds with less health, so it’s worth discussing. If you’ve ever played a fighting game, it won’t surprise you to learn that you can’t block claws. This attack ignores your shield and heavily penalizes being behind your block.

Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to read. The only trick is distinguishing it from Melania’s lunge attack. Both attacks start on the ground, where she retreats before launching herself across the arena. For the thrust, she turns to the right and withdraws the sword from her. For her grip, Melania turns slightly to the left as she keeps her free hand with which she grabs you next to her. Once she recognizes these two attacks, they shouldn’t be a problem.

Survive the Beginning of Malenia’s Second Phase by Rolling Under Her

A new attack in Malenia’s arsenal for the second phase is a Dive Bomb, which deals massive damage on impact before unleashing a scarlet explosion. The second phase of the battle always starts with this attack, and it can be frustrating to get crushed by it before you have a chance to study the phase. Fortunately, there is a simple trick to dodge the attack.

All you have to do is curl up under Melania, just like you did with the waterfowl dance. For some reason, the secondary explosion seems to constantly move away from Malenia. If you go under it, you can effectively dodge both hits and have time to retreat when the rot blooms. If you have a way of doing ranged damage, the long bloom animation is a good time to do some damage.

Use weapon skills that knock down Malenia

Malenia staggers almost as easily as a normal opponent and rewards your aggression… up to a point. She also recovers quickly from flips and loves to punish you if you try to land an extra hit. However, she is just as easy to knock down or knock down, resulting in larger, safer openings.

Certain weapon skills lend themselves incredibly well to this task. Blasphemous Blade’s Flame of the Sexton ability, Prelate’s Charge, and even a simple Uppercut serve as effective crowd control. Pair these abilities with Mimic Tear or another powerful Spirit Ash, and you’ll be able to corner Malenia for most of the fight.

Use Blood Loss or Frostbite to counter Malenia’s heal.

Curing Malenia can be frustrating, but there are a few ways to counter it. Of course, “don’t get hit” is the most important of these, but there are other practical methods as well. Blood loss adds a percentage of Malenia’s health, making her a reliable source of extra damage that can interrupt her healing. Weapons like Boody Helice and Rivers of Blood work especially well.

Frost Bite does less damage up front, but reduces the target’s damage reduction. This helps you deal more consistent damage throughout the fight and makes any healing less effective. The Hoarfrost Stomp ability is one of the best ways to use Frostbite, even after the recent nerf.

Final Words

We hope our article on How to beat Malenia, Blade of Miquella in Elden Ring will help you and resolve all your problems. However, you will probably be surprised that you only need to encounter a fraction to complete Elden Ring. Not that you should stick to the critical path as many are also keys to specific side quests and are subject to achievements and trophies, for completers the list is much longer.
