How to Fix Ubuntu Login Loop Issue

In this article we will try to teach you how to Fix Ubuntu Login Loop Issue. Ubuntu is a free, open-source distribution of Linux. It is an operating system for cloud computing in support of Open Stack. Ubuntu is integrated by the Canonical Community and is freely available. Canonical Ltd. is also responsible for the Ubuntu financing. One of the most common and arguably most frustrating errors faced by Ubuntu users is the login boot loop. If you try to log in to Ubuntu after it has started, you will be taken straight back to the same login screen and the process will repeat itself endlessly.

It may seem like you’re out of luck, but there are a few ways to break the loop. The most common cause is a strange permissions issue with a file that Ubuntu needs to launch the graphical desktop. You can bypass it by entering the command line shell and fixing the file permission. Below we have mention the steps to resolve Ubuntu Login Loop Issue.

Ways to Fix Ubuntu Login Loop Issue

Change the Permissions of Xauthority

ls -lah | grep -i Xauthoritysudo chown username:username .Xauthority

  • Now press Ctrl + Alt + F7 to return to your normal login screen. Simply Log in to Ubuntu.

Change “/tmp” permissions

  • Sometimes the “/tmp” folder also causes the issue. So to fix this, log in to the terminal again and run:

sudo ls -lah /tmp

  • If it looks like “drwxrwxrwt,” you’re all okay. If not, you will have to reset the permission uding chmod command.

sudo chmod 1777 /tmp

  • If this also does not work, go back to terminal (Ctrl+ALT+F3), login, and enter the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install lxdm

  • If lxdm is not selected, select it by using the UP and DOWN arrow keys and press ENTER. Then reboot using the command sudo reboot.

Use Shell

First of all, just boot up Ubuntu like usual. When the login screen comes up, though, instead of signing in, proceed to press Ctrl+Alt+F3 on the keyboard. Ubuntu should now exit the GUI login screen and enter a Terminal prompt mode. You will be prompted to enter your username and password eventually. Do so, and then enter the commands given below:

sudo apt updatesudo apt-get -y dist-upgradesudo apt-get -y autoremovesudo apt-get -y cleanreboot

Once these commands have been executed, you should be able to log into Ubuntu without any problems. If you want to exit the command line, you can press Ctrl+Alt+F2 on your keyboard. This will take you to the GUI screen.
