ChromeOS has come a long way in a decade. Not only can you now use many apps offline, but newer Chromebooks can also run Android apps, greatly increasing their versatility. If you want more powerful features and dedicated desktop apps, you can set up Linux on your Chromebook. The good news is that this is much easier than you think, and you don’t have to wipe your hard drive or do complicated “distribution” stuff to do it. That’s because Google has made Linux available on ChromeOS.

And here we will show you how to run Linux on your Chromebook. The biggest advantage is the ability to run full desktop apps on your Chromebook. While you can, for example, edit photos with web apps like Snapseed or Pixlr on a regular Chromebook, these are very basic or require a subscription to access the more powerful features. On Linux, you can download GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), which lets you use many of the same tools as Adobe’s full version of Photoshop, but all for free and on a Chromebook.
