Check How To Run Microsoft Edge On Chromebook

I know that most Chromebook users use Chrome as their browser of choice. After all, it is the default Chromebook browser and interface. However, some people prefer alternative browsers (such as the one that comes with Chrome OS) for Android or Linux. There’s a new one today, at least officially. Microsoft Edge for Linux is no longer in beta and is now publicly available for Linux users. Here’s how to install that version of Microsoft Edge on a Chromebook. To use Microsoft Edge for Linux on your Chromebook, you must first activate Linux. To do so, open Chrome OS Settings and find the Developers menu under Advanced. I’ve included a screenshot of what this screen looks like if you already have Linux installed. Otherwise, just follow the instructions on your Chromebook to activate Linux. It shouldn’t take more than a minute or two.

Enable Linux on Chrome OS

To get started, you’ll need to enable Linux on Chrome OS. Not all Chromebooks support this feature and you’ll need to check this list to make sure your device is compatible. Most modern Chromebooks with newer Intel or AMD processors should work fine with Linux. Once things are ok, go to the Settings menu on your Chromebook. You can do this by clicking the clock in the bottom right corner of the screen and then clicking the gear icon. After that, click Advanced and choose Developers. From there, find the Linux development environment and choose the Activate option. Follow the steps on the screen. Your Chromebook will download a Linux environment (virtual machine). You can choose how much space you use and assign a username. When the installation completes, a Linux terminal window opens, but you can close it.

Download the Linux version of Microsoft Edge

Next, you’ll want to download Microsoft Edge. To do this, visit the Microsoft Edge website. In the list, you will see that ChromeOS is not supported. Don’t worry. Just click the blue down icon next to the box and choose Linux .DEB. This is the file type supported by Linux on ChromeOS. Allow the file to download, and then when it’s done, navigate to where it’s saved.

Install Microsoft Edge

In this third step, we are in the easy part. Simply navigate to where you downloaded the Edge .DEB file and click on it to launch it. You will see a message on your screen about the application details. The message explains what Edge can do for you on your Chromebook. When you’re done reading, click the blue Install button and wait a few minutes. Your Chromebook will install Edge and the installation window will disappear. You can now launch Edge at any time by searching for it from the Chrome OS launcher. You can even move Edge to the shelf of your Chromebook by right-clicking the icon in the Linux Applications folder and choosing Pin to Shelf.
