Use Offline Mode on Steam Deck

This article is about how to use offline mode on Steam Deck. Valve’s Steam Machine earlier this year. This is a handheld console that is similar to the Nintendo Switch games. It can be connected to a monitor or you can play games with it on the go. The Steam Deck is basically a compact computer that can play a full Steam library. It also has a feature for compatibility with Windows PC games. Steam offline mode is a feature that lets you play single-player games without connecting to the Internet. It is also available for online multiplayer titles that have offline features, such as CS: GO’s Bot Mode.

While the Steam Deck is an ideal device for playing many graphics-intensive titles on the go, the need to connect to the Internet for many games limits its portability somewhat. To make matters worse, Steam games requires an online library check every time (DRM authorities are always on guard). Emulators(opens in new tab) aren’t affected by this, but imagine my frustration when we wanted to play a bit of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the train to London. Below, we have mention the steps to use offline mode on Steam Deck.

2 Methods to Use Offline Mode on Steam Deck

You need to set up your Steam offline mode before you can play your game without a connection. Here’s how you do it.

Step 1: Open Steam and log in while connected to the internet.

Step 2: Check your games and make sure that everything is installed properly.

Step 3: Launch the game that you want and wait if it opens up without extra downloaded files. If it downloads extra files then do not disconnect from your connection yet. You need to have the full game file downloaded.

Step 4: Close the game and go back to Steam.

Step 5: Navigate to Steam then click on Settings. Head over to Account.

Step 6: Deselect the “don’t save account credentials on this computer”.

Step 7: Go back to the main page of Steam.

Step 8: Navigate to Steam, then click on Go Offline then click on Enter Offline Mode. This will set your Steam Deck to offline mode.

Step 9: To verify, close your Steam.

Step 10: Open Steam again.

Step 11: A pop-up will appear asking you to Go Online or Start in Offline Mode.

Step 12: Select Offline Mode.

Step 13: Open your game and have fun!

Steam Deck Offline Mode Problems

Losing Saved Data

Step 1: Playing in offline mode means that Steam could not save your file to the cloud immediately. Sometimes the Steam deck might not save your game data and other information.

Step 2:  Prevent this from happening by shutting down your console properly. Do not force close your games and other applications.

Update Your Game Before Going Offline

Step 1: There are games that can be played offline despite having an update. However, this might cause a problem once you go online since the game is technically outdated.

Step 2: Make it a habit to update your games regularly before going offline. Make sure that the files are verified too to prevent game corruption.

Keep Your Steam Deck Updated

Step 1: There are bugs where you can’t open a game on your Steam Deck because the actual Steam OS is out of date. As with your games, make sure that your Steam Deck’s software is also up to date.

Step 2: This will help you prevent bugs from occurring. This will also ensure that your device receives all bug fixes directly from Valve.
