The LG SN8YG is suitable for mixed use. It has a punchy, bass-heavy sound that works well for action movies as well as music genres such as EDM. While some may find it too boomy or muddy, it comes with a plethora of sound enhancement features to assist you in getting the best sound for your content. Its built-in Google Assistant also lets you control your audio with voice commands. However, its poor surround sound performance does not help it create an immersive sound. While it can be loud enough to hear most content, there are pumping and compression artifacts at maximum volume.

The LG SN8YG is a low-profile soundbar that should fit beneath most TVs. The subwoofer is obviously larger and more noticeable in the living room, but it’s also not the largest or most inconvenient subwoofer we’ve seen. The top has a brushed aluminum finish and a row of touch-capacitive playback controls, as well as two plastic grilles for the upfiring speakers and a separate silver plastic grille for the front drivers.

The soundbar measures 2.2 x 41.7 x 4.7 inches (LxWxD) and the subwoofer measures 15.4 x 8.7 x 12.3 inches (LxWxD). The three drivers for the left, right, and center channels are obviously present inside the soundbar, but the SN8YG also includes two top-firing speakers – though we noticed they don’t often make a lot of noise when watching standard stereo or surround sound content. The soundbar’s connections are fairly standard, with one HDMI-In, one HDMI-Out (ARC/eARC enabled), optical audio, and USB. It would be nice to have more than one HDMI-In port here, but what’s available is adequate.

The plastic remote that comes with the soundbar is basic but adequate, and the LED lights on the soundbar do a good job of indicating which mode you’re in and whether it’s playing a Dolby Atmos source. In fact, the only real design flaw is that the SN8YG is only a two-piece system, consisting of the bar and the sub. Surround speakers can be added for an additional $149 with the 2.0 Channel Rear Speaker Kit (LG SPK8-S 2.0).
