Save $22: Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen, 2022) in just $27.99 at Best Buy

Amazon tends to push its Echo smart speakers with small steps, not big ones, but sometimes small steps are just enough. The fifth-generation Echo Dot doesn’t sound much different than the previous version, but new motion sensors now allow you to interact with the speaker by tapping on it. The Echo Dot with Clock has an LED display that can show useful information, while offering all the features of the standard Echo Dot.

The fifth-generation Echo Dot is almost identical in appearance to the fourth-generation model. It is a slightly squat 3.9-inch by 3.5-inch sphere (HD), available in light blue or white. The sphere is diagonally split, with the top and front halves covered in mesh fabric and the bottom and back halves enclosed in matte plastic. Four rubber buttons protrude from the fabric on the top of the sphere. It glows blue when you interact with Alexa, and focuses a particularly bright spot to indicate the direction from which the voice command was registered.

Amazon has upgraded the internal speaker driver, but not significantly. At 1.73 inches in diameter, it’s slightly larger than the fourth-generation Echo Dot’s 1.6-inch driver. Despite the larger diaphragm, the newer speaker is an ounce and a half lighter at 10.7 ounces. Since this is a stationary speaker rather than a portable one, this weight reduction doesn’t make much of a difference in everyday use.

New motion sensors in the Echo Dot provide additional ways to interact with the speaker beyond voice and the few physical buttons on the top. Now you can easily tap the top of the speaker to play or pause songs, end calls, stop ringing timers or snooze alarms.

Amazon has also added Eero mesh network support, so the Echo Dot can serve as a node for your Eero network if you use one. Amazon says the node enables Eero Wi-Fi coverage of up to 1,000 square feet at speeds of up to 100 Mbps for up to 10 devices at a time. The Echo Dot also supports Bluetooth and dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and can work with Amazon’s Sidewalk shared network.
