Review: HAYLOU PurFree BC01

Headphones with bone conduction are an exciting category of devices because, in theory, they allow you to listen to music while remaining fully aware of what is happening around you since the ear canal is not blocked. It generates vibrations in the bones of your skull, which vibrate the ossicles in your inner ear so that you perceive that as sounds. It’s an exciting concept, and several companies have proven it works. HAYLOU, a manufacturer of earphones and smartwatches, seems to be getting its first experience in this product category with the PurFree BC01. It does many things well, while some others show their inexperience.

Design and Comfort

The HAYLOU PurFree BC01 looks identical to the Shokz OpenRun Pro, Shokz OpenRun, and Mojawa Mojo1. It has two vibrators responsible for sending vibrations along the cheekbones, two ear hooks to hold them in place, and two areas for electronics behind the ears. A flexible headband sits on the back of the wearer’s head.

However, a subtle difference caught our eye in the form of the HAYLOU Purfree BC01’s delightfully named multifunction button (MFB). As on most bone conduction headphones, it’s there to pause music – presumably to safely cross the road or have a conversation with someone – but here, it also controls music playback and voice assistant summoning.

Speaking of materials, HAYLOU highlights that they used soft-touch silicone to envelop the device’s body, as it provides more comfort (and feels better) than alternatives. I can confirm that it feels perfect and does not cause discomfort even after a few hours of use.

Features

The HAYLOU Purfree BC01 has everything you would expect from a bone conduction headphone, plus a few extra features. The most exciting thing is that the HAYLOU Purfree BC01 can pair with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. At least, that is what is claimed on the packaging. In practice, we could not do this; with the HAYLOU Purfree BC01, only one device at a time can connect via Bluetooth.

HAYLOU Purfree BC01 also comes with dual-mic noise cancellation for hands-free calls, making it ideal for use around a home, office and while on the move for things other than running and workouts. It is also possible to call up Siri or Google Assistant by long pressing that button on the transducer.

Connectivity

HAYLOU PurFree uses the Qualcomm 3044 Bluetooth 5.2 chip, pairs speedily, and has a stable connection. In addition, it also supports aptX encoding. Connecting to an aptX-compatible device gives you more high-definition and smooth sound quality. HAYLOU PurFree also supports dual-device connection, and the usability is also improved. As for the connection, select HAYLOU BC01 in the device list of the Bluetooth settings of the cell phone to pair quickly.

Sound Performance

The HAYLOU PurFree BC01 sounds impressive, not just because they go for a song. We tried it out with many different types of content while running and got the same excellent results.

Unlike many bone conduction headphones, the HAYLOU PurFree BC01 bone conduction headphones do not overdo the bass, avoiding the odd side effect of buzzing vibrations that “tickle” the wearer’s cheekbones. Although the treble is slightly truncated, there is enough detail to satisfy all but the most demanding music fans. It is also balanced, with plenty of bass in the background.

This is true even when the HAYLOU PurFree BC01 bone conduction headphones are used at their highest volume, which we found to be just loud enough for a city run (although on a busy road, you will have trouble hearing everything due to the open-ear design).

Battery Life

HAYLOU PurFree has a battery life of up to 8 hours in a single session, which can guide you through running a marathon. It can be fully charged in 1.5 hours, making the experience very convenient and fast. You can charge it once a week if you train for an hour a day. And after 20 minutes of charging, you can use it for 2 hours.

Final Words

These are a good option if you want an affordable bone conduction headset that allows you to take calls or run in urban environments. The HAYLOU PurFree BC01 is designed for running, training and exercise. Able to stay in place during exercise and withstand sweat, rain and dust, the HAYLOU PurFree BC01’s main selling point is its open-ear design that lets the wearer stay alert to what’s happening around them while simultaneously listening to music.

Price of HAYLOU PurFree BC01

At Amazon, the regular price for the HAYLOU PurFree BC01 bone conduction headphones is $133.32. However, you can use the coupon code during the payment process HAYLOUBC01 and get the headphone for an effective price of $74.79.
