Three Cortland County lawmakers backed away from the Republican Party.
Lawmakers Joseph Nauseef, Kelly Fairchild Preston and Linda Jones are no longer registered with any party.
They decided last year that they didn’t want party pressure to impact their votes, but deferred their decision until this week, so as not to impact the election.
“It’s time for the local and federal levels to start acting in the best interests of their communities and their country,” said Fairchild Preston.
The Speaker of the Cortland County Legislature said in a statement: “While I am disappointed with anyone leaving the Republican Party at this time, this decision will have no impact on the day-to-day functioning of our legislature. No matter what party affiliations our legislature is made up of, every legislator is treated fairly, regardless of political affiliation.
