A recent study on how HR professionals assess online information and the social media profiles of job applicants highlight ways in which so-called “cybervetting” can introduce bias and moral judgment into the recruitment process.
“The study shows that e-banking ultimately assesses the moral character of every candidate for a job,” says Steve McDonald, corresponding author of the study and professor of sociology at North Carolina State University. “It is equally clear that many of the aspects considered by hiring professionals make it possible to more it is likely that prejudice plays a role in hiring. “
For this study, the researchers conducted in-depth interviews with 61 human resource professionals involved in recruiting and hiring across many industries. Study participants ranged from internal HR staff to executive search consultants to staffing agency professionals.
