BILLINGS. Mountain. (AP) – Dozens of vehicles crashed into an icy highway bridge over the Yellowstone River outside of Billings, MT on Saturday, making the span look like a demolition site with crushed cars and trucks.
The stacking involved around 30 vehicles, the Montana Highway Patrol said on Twitter. No deaths were reported, but two people were injured, the highway patrol said. He blamed the ice on the bridge to be the cause of the wreckage that closed Interstate 90 for a while.
First responders found the two injured people below the bridge, the Billings Gazette reported.
The Montana Highway Patrol said on Twitter that the two injured people “jumped off the bridge during the incident to avoid being struck by a vehicle. They suffered serious injuries but are expected to recover. “
A Billings city bus was dispatched to the scene to move several travelers whose vehicles were destroyed or were stranded by other crashed vehicles to an event center.
“It was like bumper cars,” Bella Contreraz told the newspaper. She said she slammed on her brakes when she saw vehicles stop in front of her. An oncoming tractor-trailer struck his vehicle, crashing it onto the side of the bridge. Another driver, she said, helped her escape by forcefully opening her door.
Billings streets were crowded with traffic, with drivers looking for alternate routes.
