CHARLESTON — For the first time since late August, there are fewer than 10,000 active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia. According to the latest statistics from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources on Tuesday, there were 753 new cases reported since Monday’s update. But active cases decreased overall to 9,861, a drop of 700.

Active cases in local counties Tuesday (previous day) are: Calhoun, 25 (25); Doddridge, 93 (88); Gilmer, 47 (49); Jackson, 203 (205); Pleasants, 25 (27); Ritchie, 73 (78); Roane, 89 (95); Tyler, 38 (46); Wetzel, 95 (106); Wirt, 38 (36); Wood, 483 (530). The state’s death toll from the virus since the start of the pandemic in the spring of 2020 is just five away from 4,000.

“As we remember these West Virginians who have passed away, we must not tire of preventive measures that ensure the health and safety of our friends, family and neighbors,” Cabinet Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. “I urge you to schedule your COVID vaccine today.” Hospitalizations across West Virginia increased slightly to 840, with the number of patients in intensive care units (240) and on ventilators (173) remained close to the previous day’s totals (248 and 171, respectively).

A data reconciliation using official death certificates yielded 11 more COVID deaths between August and September, including a 78-year-old Wood County woman and a 59-year-old Doddridge County man. DHHR announced the deaths of eight people — ranging in age from 46 to 90 and from Lewis, Mingo, Preston, Putnam and Randolph counties — had been attributed to the virus.

At WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center, there were 68 COVID patients as of Tuesday morning, 10 of whom were fully vaccinated. All but one of the 17 ICU patients was unvaccinated, while 15 of 16 patients on ventilators were unvaccinated.
