After a second woman over the weekend publicly accused Cuomo of sexually harassing her, Cuomo sought to bring in a former federal judge, who works with a longtime friend of the governor, as his external investigator to look into the matter.
That idea failed and on Sunday morning Cuomo tried again: he proposed that an outside investigator be jointly appointed by James and the state’s chief justice, Janet DiFiore, whom Cuomo appointed for the top post. of the Court of Appeal.
This idea also fell through after opposition from James and a number of top Democrats. Hours later, Cuomo said he was referring the case to James, who would hire a private law firm to review the two women’s claims.
But State Senator Todd Kaminsky, Democrat from Long Island and former senior federal prosecutor, said Cuomo, under current law, would continue to receive weekly updates on the investigation and that he was monitoring the dollars to fund such an investigation.
“The attorney general must be empowered to conduct investigations and prosecutions without fear and without favor, no matter what the subject,” Kaminsky said as he quickly introduced the bill on Monday.
The measure is expected to be introduced soon in the Assembly and sponsored by Peoples-Stokes; she said her staff were reviewing the Kaminsky bill.
