At least 58 people died and many others were injured in the accident between Manawala and Ferozpur railway stations near Amritsar, when the train passed through the crowd that had gathered to follow the event in Dussehra .
The wife of Punjab Minister Navjot Sidhu, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who was the main guest of the program, later stated that no one knew how the accident had occurred, people having fun and taking selfies standing on the rails.
The accident occurred near the Joda Phatak area of Amritsar, where a large number of people watched the burning image of Ravan standing on the train track when the train crashed. The train was coming from Jalandhar to Amritsar.
The victims apparently did not hear the whistling of the train because of the explosion of crackers. According to witnesses, among the dead, there were children. There were about 700 people at the scene of the accident. The new PTI news agency, however, claimed
