Biology students master volumetric measurement techniques while creating a unique work of art, all with Covid restrictions in place.
Science students are expected to demonstrate a skill set, including a range of essential lab skills. In our Cellular and Molecular Biology course (BIOL 240), a crucial skill is the transfer of small volumes of liquids using a micropipette. To learn this fundamental technique, students follow a “pipette-by-numbers” pattern on a canvas, which allows them to assess their ability to transfer the correct volume (demonstrating accuracy) over and over (demonstrating accuracy). In the end, each student’s image becomes part of a larger pattern of all the images created by the students in the lab, resulting in a colorful representation of the double helices in DNA.
During this lab activity, students who chose to participate in the lab in person completed the experiment in partnership with remote students who joined by videoconference.
