There is a good chance that you will receive or give away a card with a heart on it today. The heart symbol may have come from a now extinct plant called silphium. During antiquity, it was popular as a perfume, seasoning, medicine and aphrodisiac and may be related to modern fennel. The shape of the seed or fruit, stamped on silver from the 7th century BC Cyrene Coins, almost resembles the symbolic hearts of Valentine’s Day.

Or its origin can be traced back to the writings of Galen and Aristotle, who described the heart as having three chambers with a small bump in the middle. His first known portrayal of romantic love dates back to the 1250s.

Regardless of its beginnings, the heart of comics has been beating strong ever since, not only on Earth but across the cosmos. Like true love, you’ll find it in the less obvious spaces and places.
