Bakery closes after nearly 170 years of activity

HONOLULU (KITV) – Locally owned and operated Love’s Bakery, which has been in Hawaii for more than 169 years, will cease operations at the end of March due to losses from Covid-19.

Acting President Daryce Hamamoto submitted a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice (WARN) letter to the Ministry of Labor and Industrial Relations on Monday afternoon, saying the company would lay off 231 employees on March 31. 2021.

Haramoto says declining income, rising ingredient costs, and replacing aging equipment have all become too big for the bakery.

The letter reveals that the bakery is seriously behind on rent at its Middle Street location and at five retail stores in O’ahu, the island of Hawaii and Maui. …Read more
