Tens of thousands of people out of work due to the pandemic say they are at a critical point. For many, unemployment checks ceased weeks ago as the EDD tries to resolve allegations of fraud and other issues, but many say they can’t wait any longer.
“I called 26 times yesterday,” hairstylist Veronica Rodriguez said. “Today, I am 21 years old and it is 10:30 in the morning.”
Rodriguez spends his days trying to reach someone at EDD, only to hang on.
The unemployed hairdresser and mother of two says her unemployment benefits ended weeks ago without any explanation. With her savings depleted, she plans to violate the order of health to feed her family.
“We are in a position where I don’t want to work illegally but I have to earn an income,” she said.
The Center for Workers’ Rights said their phones kept ringing. They say EDD has frozen payments to hundreds of thousands of people …
