Welcome to our list of the best 2-in-1 laptops. There are many affordable tablets on the market that can be useful if you just want to take a lightweight device with you on the go, but also want an extra-large screen to enjoy the media. Unfortunately, standalone tablets just don’t have the same productivity chops as good laptops, especially because they tend to lack a keyboard and many of the ports of a laptop. However, 2-in-1 laptops offer the best of both worlds.
With a 2-in-1 laptop, you get all your computer hardware packed in the form factor of a tablet, and you get a seamlessly designed keyboard dock that turns the device into a fully functioning laptop. Better yet, by making your laptop and tablet one and the same device, you don’t have to download and copy the same programs and data to separate devices. Many of these devices will also be ahead of traditional laptops, as they tend to have more capable touchscreens and stylus support, making them excellent for mobile gaming ports and art or design.
Best 2-in-1 Laptops list
We’ve rounded out the very best options on the market, so you can fulfill your needs for both a tablet and a laptop while only purchasing one device.
Lenovo Yoga C940
The best 2-in-1 laptop with a 14-inch display
With the Yoga C940, Lenovo took a formula and refined it. Subtle design improvements, long battery life (up to 11:46), and updated 10th generation Intel processors make the Lenovo Yoga C940 a worthy successor to last year’s excellent Yoga C930. As you would expect from a Yoga series laptop, the C940 has a premium, ultra-portable chassis and a unique hinge that also serves as a soundbar speaker. As a 2-in-1 that hinge can rotate 360 degrees to turn the Yoga C940 into a real tablet.
When it comes to viewing content, the Yoga C940’s 1080p and 4K displays are bright, rich, and vibrant; beware, the Ultra-HD display takes the battery out of sight. For basics, my favorite things about the Yoga C940 are its extra features. These include a webcam cover (no more tape needed), a slot for the included stylus, and a fingerprint sensor. Overall, this is one of the best 2-in-1 laptops you can buy now.
HP Spectre x360
The best 2-in-1 laptop overall
The Spectre x360 13 is the best 2-in-1 laptop ever. Updated with a 10th generation CPU and a more modern design, the Spectre x360 13 has improved in almost every way over its excellent predecessor. Highlights of this laptop include a beautiful design that shows off faceted edges and beveled corners. Those precision-cut details make the Spectre look more like a piece of jewelry than a gadget.
There’s also a beautiful design with a clear 1080p display, epic 13+ hours of battery life, and fast overall performance. There’s almost nothing the Spectre x360 13 doesn’t do well, although the speakers could use some tuning. We set the Spectre x360 13 up against some of our other favorite 2-in-1 laptops, including the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and Lenovo Yoga C940, but none of these major competitors could dethrone the HP.
HP Elite Dragonfly
The best 2-in-1 laptop for business users
When it comes to the best 2-in-1 laptops for the power users, the HP Elite Dragonfly is at the top of our list with its combination of portability and power. It’s also one of the best business laptops we’ve seen in a long time, with a thin and light design – complete with incredible speakers, a sublime keyboard, and the optional 550 nits 4K display – that’s hard to handle. This hybrid gets our coveted five-star rating, which already says a lot because we don’t beam it lightly.
Dell XPS 13 2-in-1
A 2-in-1 alternative to the Yoga C940 and the Spectre x360
You will have trouble finding an error in the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1. Not only is the design incredibly compact and lightweight, but it also features a beautiful, responsive screen, a beautifully woven design, and a delightful keyboard. But it’s more than just the looks. It is also pretty impressive when it comes to performance, thanks to the 10th generation Intel Core processors and Intel Iris Plus graphics. If you are looking for the best 2-in-1 with more than enough power, lots of versatility and a nice design to get started, you will be crazy not to get it.
Microsoft Surface Book 3
Most premium 2-in-1 detachable laptop
The 15-inch version of Microsoft’s Surface Book 3 is a stunning technical performance that packs a powerful Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU into the basics of a detachable 2-in-1. With that kind of graphics power, you can edit 4K videos or create professional 3D animations while connected to the keyboard and then turn off the screen for drawing or taking notes. Surface Book 2 also features a brilliant PixelSense screen, a powerful Intel 10th Gen Core i7 CPU, and over 11 hours of battery life in laptop mode. Overall, this is one of the best 2-in-1 laptops at the moment.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga
A powerful ThinkPad in a 2-in-1 form factor
Lenovo took a chance with the ThinkPad X1 Yoga, the first metal ThinkPad, and it paid off. While we still love the distinctive matte-black carbon fiber found on most ThinkPads, the aluminum and magnesium ThinkPad X1 Yoga is an excellent change of pace. Not only does it have a sleek design, but this convertible 2-in-1 shows a clear display and offers a best-in-class keyboard and long battery life. You’ll also get lots of extra goodies, like a built-in stylus slot and a webcam cover. There is simply no better business convertible than the ThinkPad X1 Yoga, apart from HP’s beautiful new Elite Dragonfly.
Microsoft Surface Pro 7
A compact 2-in-1 hybrid laptop
Surface Pro 7 is an excellent laptop in last year’s Surface Pro 6 and gives it a power boost. Although battery life is a hit, the new 10th generation CPU delivers excellent performance. The design hasn’t changed at all, but the Surface Pro 7 now has a USB-C port for charging and connecting peripherals. Microsoft continues to sell the comfortable Alcantara Type Cover and super-responsive Surface Pen, making it easy to draw or take notes on the tablet’s vibrant and bright 12.3-inch display. Overall, this is one of the best 2-in-1 laptops at the moment.
Acer Spin 5
A budget-oriented 2-in-1 laptop
A great feature set certainly adds a lot of value, and if you’re looking for the best 2-in-1 laptops, that’s one thing to keep an eye on. It’s that, combined with affordability, that makes the Acer Spin 5 (2020) a great candidate. This 2-in-1 laptop is not only versatile because of its form factors and excellent battery life. It also comes with a 3:2 display and feature-rich stylus that together provide that added benefit for both students and professionals over its rivals: an easy and seamless note-taking experience. If you’re one of those people who detest typing notes in class, this old-fashioned approach can seal the deal.
HP Envy x360 13
Another 2-in-1 laptop by HP
The HP Envy x360 13 is the best under $1,000 laptop and one of the best 2-in-1 laptops on the market. Although it doesn’t come with a stylus (nor does the Surface Pro), the Envy is a 2-in-1 so you can flip it over in tent or tablet mode. What makes this such a great value is the all-aluminum design and Herculian AMD Ryzen processors. In our tests, we discovered that an Envy x360 13 with a Ryzen 5 4500U CPU can outperform laptops with 10th generation Intel chips.
This Envy costs just $800 and can outperform laptops costing over $1,000, including the absurd MacBook Pro. Plus, the Envy x360 13 features a bright, vibrant 13.3-inch display and a comfortable keyboard. There’s little we don’t like about the Envy x360. If you can overcome the lack of a Thunderbolt 3 port and IR camera, it’s the ultimate money-saving laptop.
Acer Chromebook Spin 713
The best 2-in-1 Chromebook
If you don’t have the best impression of the Acer laptops, let the Chromebook Spin 713 change that for you. This ChromebookSpin 713 has almost everything you can ask for in a budget laptop. You get a crisp, colorful 13.5-inch touch display, exceptional battery life of nearly 12 hours, and fast performance thanks to the Core i5 processor. Plus, the design is made of aluminum and is 2-in-1, so you can flip the screen and turn it into a tablet.
With a thickness of 0.7 inches and a weight of 3 pounds, Spin 713 can easily be carried in a backpack on the way to class or work. Yes, the keyboard is a little shallow, and the speaker could be better; however, if you want a convertible Chromebook at a low price, you won’t do better than the Acer Chromebook Spin 713. Overall, this is one of the best 2-in-1 laptops you can buy now.
