Canon manufactures a few cheaper DSLRs than this one, including the 18-megapixel EOS 4000D and the 24-megapixel EOS 2000D, but we think they are too small in terms of functionality and build quality and recommend paying a small surcharge for the EOS Rebel SL3 DSLR (sold as the EOS 250D in Europe). Why is this? Because it has a variable-angle touch screen on the back and a sensor with Canon’s dual-pixel AF CMOS technology, so real-world autofocus is really fast.

This is the second cheapest Canon DSLR, and although it’s basic, it’s a perfect camera for a student or a cash-strapped beginner who just wants to get started. It has a 24-megapixel sensor, which is still pretty good for an APS-C sensor camera, although this model doesn’t have Canon’s dual-pixel AF CMOS system, so if you use the rear monitor to compose your shots, the autofocus will be a slower contrast-based system.
This camera doesn’t allow you to shoot 4K videos, nor does it have a variable angle screen, so if you can afford the extra, we recommend switching to the Rebel SL3/EOS 250D. The EOS M200 is an upgrade to the Canon EOS M100, which shares with this camera the return to basic design and simplified controls. The 24-megapixel sensor gives good image quality, but there are compromises at this price: you don’t have an electronic viewfinder, for example, and although the EOS M200 shoots 4K video, it’s not at full image width and uses a slower contrast AF system.
