Best Olympus Cameras

Perhaps the biggest bombshell in the camera world this year did not come in the form of an exciting new launch, but the news that Olympus – one of the oldest and most respected brands in the world – was divesting its camera business. Olympus has been making cameras and lenses since 1936 and celebrated its centenary last year in 2019. Although rumors have long circulated about the sale of its camera division, these rumors have been suppressed on several occasions. Still, today we are here with our list of the best Olympus cameras.

Of course, the big news in the camera industry is that Olympus has agreed to sell its imaging division. We have studied in depth what the sale of Olympus means elsewhere, but you may be wondering if you should still consider buying an Olympus camera. Well, as far as we’re concerned, you certainly should!

Best Olympus Cameras

There are some incredible innovations, but there are also some totally wacky cameras – Olympus was nothing but an original camera. Here’s the list of our most iconic and best Olympus cameras of all time.

Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III Body Silver

Last update was on: 2020-10-27 11:54 am

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III is an exceptional camera and a worthy successor to the highly acclaimed Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II. This new camera uses the latest 20.4 megapixels Micro Four Thirds sensor from Olympus, and although this may put off some people – these sensors are smaller than the APS-C – the image quality is very close, and this makes Olympus cameras and lenses particularly small and portable.

The capabilities of this new camera are astonishing, including excellent 5.5 EV body stabilization, an amazing 30fps Pro Capture mode with 14-frame pre-buffering, C4K, and 4K UHD video, Live Composite and Live Bulb modes, and much more. For now, this is the best Olympus camera that you can buy.

The predecessor of the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV, Mark III, was an excellent camera that had a lot to offer. However, with a 16MP sensor and poor AF tracking for moving objects, there was definitely room for improvement. Fortunately, the Mark IV is a great update to this Olympus camera line, with a new 20MP sensor and improved continuous autofocus. While some of the other improvements are progressive, the Mark IV brings some interesting new features, including a 15fps continuous burst mode. We’re also a fan of the tilting screen, which can be tilted down to create a perfect screen for self-mutilation. Overall, this is one of the best Olympus cameras.

If anyone thought that Olympus couldn’t compete on the professional stage, the OM-D E-M1 Mark III did put them in their place. There are many specialized cameras that can do a variety of things better than the E-M1 Mark III, it’s fair to say. However, there are very few that can do everything they can do. If you’re a professional who shoots a lot of different types of images and is in a lot of different shooting situations, it’s a surprisingly good choice.

Image stabilization in 7.5 steps, the best in the business? Check it out. Continuous burst shooting at 60 frames per second? It’s a sure thing. High-resolution shooting at 80MP? Yes, it does. Let’s imagine a hypothetical day of photography: you get up early and crawl up a hill to photograph a beautiful landscape in the morning light, using enough megapixels to get a beautiful print. You then head to a sporting event to take fast-action photos, requiring both a fast burst speed and a tracking AF system. Overall, this is one of the best Olympus cameras.

Wait, this is not the latest Olympus PEN mode camera. Why is it here? Well, while the E-PL10 is a very good camera in itself (as you’ll see below), the fact is that it is a disappointingly minor update to the E-PL9, so much so that the old camera probably offers better value for money. The E-PL9 is a high-performance street, vlogging, and fashion camera. It has a 180-degree screen for vlogging and 4K video recording, although when it came out, we were a little disappointed that Olympus kept its old 16.1-megapixel sensor instead of replacing it with its latest 20.4-megapixel sensor.

The Olympus E-PL9 is of excellent quality despite its compact and lightweight construction, and its small size makes it ideal for travel photography, especially when combined with Olympus’ remarkably small 14-42mm EZ “pancake” lens. Overall, this is one of the best Olympus cameras.

$549.00 $699.99

Let’s be clear: the Olympus PEN E-PL10 is an excellent camera. It shoots at a super-fast burst rate of 14.1 frames/second, it can produce 4K movies at a super-slow rate of 120 frames/second, it has a manual silent shooting mode and a 3-axis image stabilization system inside the body. But, as mentioned above, the reason it is listed below its big brother is that it is simply not a great upgrade, and that makes it harder to justify its price for 2020.

It has the same 16MP sensor that we were a little disappointed not to see upgraded on the E-PL9! If you’re a content creator who wants a camera that shoots great photos and videos and ideally looks great, the E-PL10 is the best. At the same time, we’d like it to be a little more. Overall, this is one of the best Olympus cameras.

$1,999.00 $2,999.00

Olympus raised eyebrows with the launch of the OM-D E-M1X, a new professional camera for the sports market, but with features very similar to the existing E-M1 Mark II. But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find that the E-M1X is a very different beast, with an integrated handle for greater battery capacity and duplicate horizontal/vertical shooting controls and a dual processing system that greatly improves the game for autofocus tracking, with a new AI system for subject recognition and tracking.

What many people won’t realize either is that Olympus has a very compelling range of professional lenses, especially for telephoto, and although Olympus’ MFT sensor is smaller than the full-frame sensors used by pro-Canon, Nikon, and Sony cameras, it will cost much less to build a complete professional system – and it will be much lighter to carry. Of course, the camera has been replaced a bit by the E-M1 Mark III, but it is still one of the best Olympus cameras.

Olympus PEN cameras date back to 1959 and have followed a long evolutionary path. The Olympus PEN-F is a tribute to the early PEN cameras, which took the best elements of the OM-D E-M1 Mark II, the most powerful in the range, and transformed them into a more compact PEN camera. The result is a 20-3MP image sensor, 5-axis image stabilization, advanced controls, and, for the first time in a PEN digital camera, an integrated electronic viewfinder.

The result is a truly exciting PEN camera with outstanding performance, functionality, and handling, adding real strength to its stylish look. There are two reasons why it’s not at the top of our list. The first is that it doesn’t offer 4K video capture (which isn’t a breakthrough factor, to be honest), and the second, and more importantly, it seems that Olympus has decided to stop making it. Still, it is one of the best Olympus cameras.

At first glance, the TG-6 Olympus Tough seems inseparable from its predecessor, the TG-5. However, with a display that has twice the resolution, high-speed video options, and a new underwater mode, the TG-6 has some interesting new features. They may not justify an upgrade if you already own the TG-5, but if you have an old Tough or if you are looking for an outdoor camera that can go into the sea, get covered in sand, be laid on concrete, and take pictures and videos even in freezing temperatures, this is one of the best Olympus cameras.
