Must Read

The best printers offer a wide variety of options for printing everything from documents to professional-quality photos, all from the comfort of your home, office, or even on the road. With so many different types of printers available and so many different needs to meet, it can be difficult to tell good from bad, or even find something that fits your budget. Whether you want a feature-rich all-in-one printer for your home office, a stylish portable device that fits in a laptop bag, or just want to print out some snapshots from your last family reunion, we can help you find the right printer.

Our list includes more than the standard print/scan/copy combination devices that are so popular on store shelves. In addition to the all-in-one inkjet printers, we have also reviewed laser printers, photo printers, and even portable models, all with the goal of finding the best printer for you.

Best Printers of 2020

In our list, each printer is tested on basics such as print quality and speed, but we also look at the long term perspective and weigh factors such as printing costs or the volume the printer is built for from month to month.

1. Canon Pixma TS9120

Best printer for home

The Canon Pixma TS9120 is the best overall printer we have tested, especially thanks to its excellent print quality for both text and photos. It is also fast, with the best print speeds in its class, which gave us impressive results in almost every test. With six individual color inks, you get one of the best color qualities available when printing photos and ink costs remain reasonable, even with refills.

Scanning and copying are integrated and offer sharp detail reproduction at decent speeds. The entire device is controlled by an adjustable 5-inch color touch screen. This printer even prints disc labels on CDs and DVDs. Whatever type of printing you need, the quality and the “Bang for the Buck” that the Canon Pixma TS9120 offers make it the best printer you can get for almost any user.

2. Brother INKvestment MFC-J995DW

Best budget printer

The cost of a printer is much more than just the purchase price: the cost of ink can eat up the savings you expected from your affordable device. If you want one of the best all-in-one inkjet printers with the most affordable ink, we recommend the Brother INKvestment MFC-J995DW. This printer is equipped with extra-large ink cartridges and comes with an estimated ink supply for several years in the box, which adds up to the lowest ink cost per page we have ever seen.

In addition, Brother INKvestment MFC-J995DW offers solid printing, scanning, and copying. The print speeds are above the category average, and the two-sided printing is among the fastest we have seen. And all this while maintaining high print quality in all areas. The same fast speed and superior quality have been achieved in scanning and copying, making this one of the best printers for everyone, even if you don’t buy it because of the affordable ink.

3. Brother MFC-L2750DW XL

The best laser printer

The Brother MFC-L2750DW XL multifunction laser printer is packed with features such as a fast automatic document feeder, fax functions, and a second paper tray. It’s also fast in both duplex printing and copying, but without sacrificing speed for quality; documents look sharp and clear every time. It’s by far one of the best all-in-one printers around and our favorite laser printer – as long as you don’t have to print in color.

The MFC-L2750DW XL offers outstanding document quality and the fastest speeds ever for text and mixed text/graphics files. The printer even produced two-sided prints faster than some models can handle one-sided documents. With its high capacity toner cartridge, the MFC-L2750DW XL offers a cost per page of only 2.7 cents, the lowest we’ve ever seen in this category. Overall, this is one of the best printers in 2020.

4. Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850

Best printer for small business

The Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850 combines impressively low ink costs with a wealth of business-friendly features to take its place as the best small business inkjet printer we have tested. The EcoTank design uses refillable ink tanks and comes with enough replacement ink bottles to print thousands of pages. A small business printer designed to print more than 3,000 pages per month is more than capable of handling anything your team might throw at it.

The printer has scanning, copying, and faxing capabilities, two 250-page paper trays, a 50-sheet automatic document feeder, and a large, easy-to-use 4.3-inch touch screen for ease of use. In scheduled printer tests, the Epson ET-5850 delivered some of the fastest prints we’ve ever seen, producing crisp, clear text that is almost as good as laser printers. The same fast, high-quality performance was also found in copying and scanning, making it one of the best printers for offices that need a fully featured multifunction printer.

5. HP OfficeJet 250

Best portable printer and scanner

Not only is the HP OfficeJet 250 the best portable printer on the market, but it’s also an all-in-one, full-featured printer that’s small enough to take with you when you travel. With built-in copy and scan functionality – a rare offering in portable models – the HP surprised us by adding this functionality with the outstanding print quality and category-leading speeds. Whether you’re printing simple text documents, color photos, or scanning material to save for later, the quality was outstanding.

And somehow, despite its small size, the printer manages to boast a 2.5-inch color touch screen, a 10-page automatic document feeder, and a total weight of just 6.7 pounds with a battery attached. We wish it was a little less expensive or had slightly longer battery life, but these are minor complaints when you consider how much you can do with the HP OfficeJet 250. Overall, this is one of the best printers.

6. Brother MFC-L3770CDW Laser

Best home and office printer

The Brother MFC-L3770CDW laser is the best home office printer we have tested. This all-in-one laser model is an excellent choice for small or home offices and can be a very good option for students. It has an excellent design that feels solid and robust, and the input trays have sliders that can be adjusted to fit specific paper sizes. The scanner’s features are exceptional, as it is equipped with a flatbed scanner and has an automatic document feeder with duplex scanning capabilities, making it a great printer for double-sided and multi-page documents.

The cost per print is excellent, especially if you only use black ink. The cost increases slightly once you reach a certain number of pages, but it stays on the bottom. The cartridges themselves yield a high number of pages before they need to be replaced, and their cost is relatively low. Also, the print speed is great once you get the first page done, and is only slightly slower with color. It has impressive connectivity options, including Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and USB connection to a computer. Overall, this is one of the best printers.

7. Brother HL-L2390DW

A budget laser printer

The Brother HL-L2390DW is an all-in-one monochrome printer that offers what you rarely find in a laser printer: a low entry price. And while the cost may attract the attention of home users and small offices, its performance and features are not to be sneezed at. Printouts are sharp and above-average speed; even scans and copies are processed quickly with this printer. And while the printer is monochrome, the full-color scanner delivers lifelike color capture and fast scanning.

But it’s not only affordable to buy, but the operating costs are also low, with a cost per page of 3.7 cents when using standard capacity toner cartridges and only 2.7 cents when using high capacity toner. If you want the benefits of a laser printer without the usual costs, the Brother HL-L2390DW is one of the best printers for you.

8. Canon Pixma TR8520

One of the best photo printer

If you’re looking for an all-in-one printer with better photo quality, the Canon PIXMA TR8520 is a great option. Its cost per print is much higher than the Brother MFC-J995DW, and its page yield is not as good, but the photos are more detailed and the printer has excellent connectivity. The photos look vibrant and don’t show any streaks on the grayscales, although the colors may be a little over-saturated. The excellent connectivity options allow you to connect via Ethernet, USB, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi, and you can even print directly from your Apple or Android device.

If you want an inkjet printer that costs less in the long run and has a higher page yield, you should choose Brother. However, if you need excellent photo quality and the ability to print via Bluetooth or from your mobile device, the Canon is one of the best printers available for home use.

9. HP Envy 7855

Best for printing photos in volume

The HP Envy 7855 lives up to its jealousy-driven name as a stylish all-in-one inkjet printer that delivers solid printing performance in all areas. But besides printing documents, scanning and copying on the flatbed scanner, and even faxing, the Envy 7855 is also a great photo printer that can handle everything from small wallet-sized photos to 8 x 10s borderless photos.

And it’s this photo printing quality that caught our eye, with photo patterns that offer accurate, well-saturated colors and clear details. The Envy was not the fastest photo printer, but the quality was good and the price per photo was reasonable. And if you use HP’s HP Instant Ink subscription ink service, you can reduce the photo printing costs for 8 x 10 photos to a few pennies – but only if you print a lot of them.

10. Brother INKvestment MFC-J985DW

Best printer with cheap ink

If you need to print a lot of text documents every day, the Brother INKvestment MFC-J985DW inkjet printer is the best all-in-one printer you can get, whether you have a home or small office. The high-yield cartridges used by the MFC-J985DW offer the lowest cost per page at higher volumes, and the printer is designed to process up to 2,500 pages per month, making it perfect for printing dozens of pages per day.

This printer also offers extensive features for the home office, with built-in faxing. The MFC-J985DW is fast to scan and copy, delivers high overall image quality, and provides the sharp text on simple documents. The MFC-J985DW All-in-One delivers a lot for the money, but the real bonus is the low cost per page, which makes a big difference over time. Overall, this is one of the best printers that you can buy right now.
