Bethesda’s job listing suggests a new unannounced game

A job listing for a server engineer at Bethesda Game Studios’ Austin location suggests that the team there is working on an unannounced game.

Although Bethesda Game Studios’ primary team in Maryland also worked on Fallout 76, Bethesda Austin seems to have been the lead developer. Regardless, the game released in 2018 in a largely broken and disappointing state. Fallout 76 was supposed to be the quintessential cooperative/online Fallout experience, but the game lacked many basic features and was riddled with bugs and glitches. To its credit, Bethesda Austin has continued to support Fallout 76 since launch and spun the narrative about the game in a more positive direction. Both the Wastelanders and Steel Dawn expansions have added a number of requested features, such as NPCs, more storylines, the ability to respec characters, and much more.

A recent job listing suggests that Bethesda Game Studios’ Austin team is working on an unannounced game. The last title developed by Bethesda Austin was 2018’s Fallout 76, an online multiplayer title that allowed players to explore the franchise’s iconic wasteland together for the first time in series history.

Now it appears that Bethesda Austin is hiring for an unannounced project. The news comes from a job listing on GameJobs.co, specifically a listing for a Server Engineer at Bethesda Game Studios’ Austin location. The team is looking for someone who will “help create and improve systems for an unannounced title.” Unfortunately, the rest of the post is very technical and gives no further hints as to what the unannounced game might actually be.

Bethesda Austin is a largely overlooked team in the Bethesda Softworks family of studios. Perhaps this next project will propel the team into more of a spotlight when official information comes out about the nature and pedigree of the game. Microsoft recently acquired Bethesda Austin and the rest of Bethesda Softwork’s teams in its $7.5 billion purchase of parent company ZeniMax. Though Microsoft intends to keep Bethesda operating in more of an independent capacity, it can still funnel money and resources into Bethesda Austin’s project. Fans of Xbox can also probably anticipate Bethesda Austin’s game on its Game Pass service whenever it happens to launch, though that is likely far in the future.

Whatever it is, the game is likely not too far into development, given the team’s continued work on Fallout 76. The sparseness of the news leads one to speculate on what this mysterious new title might be. Given the team’s experience with the Fallout IP and the fact that Bethesda Game Studios proper is developing both Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI, Bethesda Austin could be working on either Fallout 5 or some other Fallout-related project. This is purely speculation, but if neither Bethesda Austin nor Bethesda Game Studios are working on a new Fallout game, it may be a long time before any sort of major Fallout release.
