WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden’s choice for Health Secretary is taking the heat of Republicans for his actions in support of abortion rights. They want to define it – and the new administration – as out of the mainstream.
The appointment of Xavier Becerra is the subject of a key vote Wednesday in the Senate finance committee. It is also a test for national groups opposed to abortion, trying to deny a president who promotes the right to abortion his choice to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
Becerra is paying the price for championing, as California’s attorney general, some of the country’s most liberal abortion rights laws and policies.
“This shows that abortion policies in California are progressive enough that anti-abortion lawmakers want to be disqualified for a cabinet position,” said Mary Ziegler, a Florida State law professor.
