Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, 91, died at his home on Thursday after prolonged illness. She is the first Indian to win an Academy Award.
Athaiya was cremated at the Chandanwadi crematorium in south Mumbai. His daughter, Radhika Gupta, confirmed that she died on Thursday morning. Radhika told a news agency that her mother was diagnosed with a brain tumor eight years ago and remained in bed for three years after being paralyzed from one side of her body.
He began his career with Guru Dutt’s 1956 film CID, winning the Academy Award for Best Costume Design in Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi alongside John Enloe. In 2012, she returned the Academy of Motions Pictures Arts and Sciences to secure her Oscar. She is also the recipient of two National Awards, which she won for the 1990 film Bada and the 2001 film Lagaan.
