Veteran costume designer Bhanu Athaiya is India’s first Academy Award winner, who breathed his last at the age of 91. Bhanu received the most prestigious Oscar Award for Best Costume Design for Richard Attenborough’s film ‘Gandhi’ released in 1983. The film starred Ben Kingsley. Title role. Speaking to The Times of India, Radhika shared that her mother Bhanu Athaiya passed away in her sleep on 15 October. The experienced designer was clearly suffering from pneumonia and had mild fever and cough.
Talking about how easy it was to decide how to get Bhanu on board for ‘Gandhi’, director Richard Attenborough told the academy, “I got 17 years to make ‘Gandhi’, my dream film, and just 15 minutes.” It began to arise in my mind that Bhanu Athaiya was the right person to make many hundreds of Indian costumes, who would need to bring it on screen. “
Apart from ‘Gandhi’, Athaiya has also designed costumes for some of the most popular Hindi films. He last designed costumes for Aamir Khan’s ‘Lagaan’ and Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Swades’.
