Robert Downey Sr., father of Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. and accomplished counter-cultural filmmaker, has passed away. He was 85 years old. Downey Jr shared this news with the world on his Instagram. He told that his father died in his sleep at home in New York late Tuesday night. He had Parkinson’s disease for more than five years. Sharing a monochrome picture of his father, RDJ wrote, “RIP Bob D. Sr. 1936-2021…Last night, Dad passed away peacefully in his sleep after suffering the ravages of Parkinson’s..He was a true nerd. The filmmaker was, and remains remarkably optimistic at all times. By my stepmother’s calculations, he was happily married for over 2000 years. Rosemary Rogers-Downie, you are a saint, and our thoughts and prayers are with you.” Downey Sr. was a Hollywood traveler who made a name for himself with radical, anti-establishment films such as the low-budget Madison Avenue advertising industry satire “Putney Swap” and the Alan Arbus-starring Western Jesus parable “Greaser Palace”. His son Robert Downey Jr., daughter Alison Downey and first wife Elsie Downey also appeared in ‘Greaser Palace’. He also starred in the film ‘To Live and Die in L.A.’, a studio manager in ‘Boogie Nights’ and a show director in ‘Magnolia’. Born in New York City in 1936 as Robert Elias Jr., he later changed his surname to Downey—the name of his stepfather—in order to enlist early in the military. After the military, he coincidentally got into film production while living in New York with his sister. The elder Downey is also survived by his wife, bestselling author Rosemary Rogers.
