NEW YORK (AP) – An articulated bus plunged dramatically from an overpass in New York City, leaving the front half hanging from the freeway ramp it was navigating through, its fall interrupted only by the road below.
The driver was seriously injured in the crash just after 11 p.m. Thursday at a Cross Bronx and Major Deegan freeway interchange, and seven passengers were lightly injured, firefighters said. They were taken to hospitals. No other vehicle was involved.
Part of the bus – essentially two buses connected by a pivot that allows it to navigate around bends – remained on the bridge, the other half upright, with its broken front end resting on the highway ramp below.
“The bus fell about 50 feet on the access road. The patients suffered injuries consistent with falling from such a great height, ”Deputy Fire Chief Paul Hopper said in a social media post.
Firefighters were planning to secure fuel and other hazardous material before pulling the bus fully onto the road, Acting Battalion Chief Steven Moore said in the post.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said it is conducting “a full investigation and will implement lessons learned to prevent this from happening again.”
“We’re sure it was a terrifying incident for the bus customers. Our hearts go out to them with the hope that we can recover quickly, ”Patrick Warren, MTA’s head of safety and security, said in a statement.
