(Reuters) – AT&T Inc TN on Friday appointed former U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) director William Kennard as chairman of the wireless operator’s board of directors, effective January 2021.
Kennard, who joined the company’s board of directors in 2014, served as general counsel of FCC from 1993 to 1997 and then was named president of the FCC, a position he held until 2001. He would be the the first African-American to serve as the company’s president in its more than 130-year history.
AT&T announced earlier this year that it would elect a new chairman, following the retirement of Randall Stephenson.
Kennard currently sits on the boards of Duke Energy Corp DUK.N, Ford Motor Co FN and MetLife Inc MET.N and is the co-founder of private equity firm Astra Capital Management.
