(Reuters) – Hyundai Motor Co, Motional, automotive joint venture 005380.KS and transit technology company Via have teamed up to launch a shared robotaxi service in the United States next year, the companies.
The partnership, which plans to launch the rides in the first half of 2021, aims to combine Motional’s driverless vehicles with Via technology that manages reservation, itinerary, passenger and vehicle allocation.
Last week, Motional announced it would resume autonomous mobility service with Lyft in Las Vegas after halting operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The partnership said on Tuesday it was working to ensure the health and safety of vehicle occupants.
Motional, which is jointly managed by automotive supplier Aptiv Plc APTV.N, competes with GOOGL.O Waymo of Alphabet Inc., GM.N Cruise of General Motors Co and Pittsburgh-based Argo AI, jointly controlled by Ford Motor. Co FN and Volkswagen AG VOWG_p. OF.
