Named as executive vice president for administration and finance

The new chief financial officer and executive vice president for finance and administration at Washington State University will be Leslie Brunelli.

Brunelli, who has more than 25 years of experience in higher education, previously held the position of senior vice chancellor for business and financial affairs at the University of Denver. May 1 will mark Brunelli’s first day in the new position.

Stacy Pearson, who was slated to leave WSU in December 2022, is succeeded by Brunelli. In order to facilitate a smooth transition as Brunelli starts the onboarding process, Pearson has since postponed her retirement until Feb. 3.

Kirk Schulz, president of the WSU System, said, “We are delighted to welcome Leslie to the Cougar community. Leslie has a distinct viewpoint and a profound understanding of financial management and university operations as a seasoned leader with experience in a variety of public and private organisations. Her advice will be extremely helpful as we consider the future of WSU.

Brunelli will now be in charge of WSU’s financial and material assets, including all facets of the institution’s system-wide financial and capital planning, information technology services, compliance and risk management, and real estate portfolio, in her newly extended position.

As the executive vice president for finance and administration at WSU, Brunelli expressed his excitement. I’m excited to help the state-wide initiative fulfil its goal of giving everyone access to a high-quality education.

At the University of Denver, Brunelli served as senior vice chancellor and treasurer, where she oversaw the institution’s financial operations and developed management procedures to support its strategic goal. She oversaw the campus’s financial response to the pandemic since coming in 2019 and redesigned financial reporting to provide transparency and clarity regarding university procedures.

Before being hired by DU, Brunelli worked for the University of South Carolina system in a number of jobs with progressively more responsible roles, culminating in her position as vice president and chief financial officer.

In the industry, Brunelli is a renowned and sought-after voice. She has frequently participated in panels and given presentations for national organisations, such as the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, the College Board, the Western Association of College and University Business Officers, and the National Association of College and University Business Officers (APLU).

Brunelli graduated from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s in philosophy and a master’s in business administration. She is an active member of the Colorado Alliance for Research Libraries and now serves as chair of the University of Denver Retirement Plan Fiduciary Delegation Committee.
