As of Wednesday evening, the CDC reported 76 cases of a more transmissible variant of the coronavirus. In fact, North Dakota chief health strategist Dr Joshua Wynne says it is spreading 1-2 times faster.
So far, no case has been reported in North Dakota, but that doesn’t mean it’s not here.
Dr Wynne tells KX News that a PCR test, or the swab test that has been used to detect COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, does not detect a person’s variant. That would require additional genomic testing, which Dr Wynne says the United States is behind schedule.
“We need to do even more of this monitoring,” said Dr Wynne.
“The Department of Health does it to a certain extent, but collectively, in this case, we in the United States should definitely be building our capacity to do it.”
This is something the United States regularly does with the flu, but not with the coronavirus, which means it’s fair to assume there are more cases …
