COVID-19 Increases Dentist Shortage, New Eastman Institute For Oral Health Program Seeks To Help

ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) – The Eastman Institute for Oral Health at the University of Rochester has launched a new program to address the growing shortage of dentists and dental assistants, what the COVID-19 pandemic is only getting worse.

The nationwide shortage of healthcare providers in the oral health industry comes at a time when staying on top of your oral health could help protect you from COVID-19.

“Oral hygiene has a lot to do with your overall health,” said Penelope Perez, freshman dental student. “It amazes me a little how many people don’t understand that if you don’t keep your mouth clean, you could really get sick.

Perez is one of 15 students enrolled in the new dental assistant training program at the University of Rochester Eastman Institute for Oral Health. The program provides paid training and employment opportunities for students heading into an industry where the number of workers is already shrinking.
