Positive Trends in Crime Data: Encouraging Progress in Criminal Justice Revealed

Crime data is not all bad news. Here’s good news on criminal justice.

In recent years, there has been progress in the field of criminal justice that is often overlooked. Despite the prevalence of tragic events such as police use of force and mass shootings, data from the Council on Criminal Justice shows that there have been positive developments.

Arrest rates have decreased significantly, dropping from over 15 million arrests a year in the mid-1990s to about 10 million in 2019.

The incarceration rate in the United States has also declined, with a third fewer people behind bars compared to the peak in 2008.

Recidivism rates, the rate at which parolees are sent back to prison, have decreased as well.

In the juvenile justice system, the number of youth removed from their homes for delinquency has dropped by two-thirds.

The Path to Improvement

Despite the challenges in the criminal justice system, there is evidence of progress. The decrease in arrest rates, incarceration rates, and recidivism rates indicate positive changes.
