Wisconsin is seeing more and more suicides statewide, according to the most recent data from the state’s Department of Health Services. In 2016, the year Brian died, 862 people in Wisconsin died by suicide.
Suicide deaths are also on the rise nationwide, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2017, nearly 38,000 Americans of working age died by suicide, an increase in the suicide rate of nearly 40% from the year 2000.
The suicide rate among male farmers is 43.2 per 100,000, according to the data – 58% higher than the national rate among men of 27.4 per 100,000.
