By the time most of the world entered the lockdown, sending most game Studios are scrambling to put together work-from-home arrangements, Hell Let Loose developer Black Matter has been working this way for over a year already. When we first spoke to CEO Max Rea, he told us about the international development of Hell Let Loose, led by designers from all over the world. Since then, Hell Let Loose has seen a successful launch of Early Access on Steam and the addition of several updates that have expanded the FPS. gamela scope and appeal of.
This past year of widespread pandemic restrictions hasn’t put a damper on the pace of Hell Let Loose development, it has been built by developers working remotely, typically from home from day one. This gave the team an edge over the past year – many of the issues that other major studios were first encountering were issues that Black Matter had already worked out solutions to. For example, the loss of accidental conversations that occur on an office partition or in office vending machines.
“I think our advice would be to encourage open voice conversation in channels like Discord, where team members can film the breeze throughout the day as they would if they were sitting side-by-side in an office, ”says Rea. “To be able to discuss the last film, game, or the book is a great way for people to get to know each other and build camaraderie, and you’ll often find solutions to problems the team will come across just in casual conversation.
However, there were other things Black Matter needed to learn. Hell Let Loose is the studio’s first title, and it’s an ambitious title – a historically authentic WWII shooter that pits two teams of 50 players against each other in fights that rely heavily on teamwork and planning.
“There was great trepidation in revealing it,” Rea tells us. “Would people like him? Would they play it? Would they like to continue playing? These are the questions that keep you awake at night – especially since, like all creative pursuits, we know the game intimately, and its negative qualities in particular!
Unreal is most powerful if you use features like blueprints and material instances
Turns out people liked Hell Let Loose, enough to give Rea and the team “a good cushion” to catch their breath after Early Access launched and assess their next set of priorities. One thing that quickly became evident was the need for updates that would allow the team to take full advantage of the power of Unreal Engine 4.
“Unreal is most powerful if you properly use features such as blueprints and material instances to let you adjust large parts of the game extremely quickly without a lot of error prone manual work, ”says Rea. “In our first year in Early Access, most of our time was spent moving from naive do-it-yourself systems through animation, sound and mapping, to using highly procedural Unreal Engine systems. “

A perfect example was the weapon animation system that Black Matter originally built for Hell Let Loose. FPS game includes over 40 gadgets and weapons that players can use, and each weapon required over 130 individual hand-crafted animations for first and third-person perspectives. Adding or adjusting a weapon required a tremendous amount of work, and Rea says that added to a significant production bottleneck.
Fortunately, we quickly switched to using an IK [inverse kinematics] method, and the power of the Unreal Engine animation graph allowed us …
