President Joseph Biden and Ted Lasso are working together to “believe” in the value of mental health, to use the words of the television football coach.
Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Toheeb Jimoh, Cristo Fernandez, Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris, and James Lance are among the actors who will participate in the conversation.
Actor Jason Sudeikis and other “Ted Lasso” cast members will be welcomed by Biden and first wife Dr. Jill Biden at the White House on Monday for a discussion on mental health, according to an announcement made on AppleTV+ on Sunday.
The discussion will centre on talking about “the significance of managing your mental health to achieve overall wellbeing,” according to a White House official.
The third season of the Emmy Award-winning programme, which is currently available on AppleTV+, contains a narrative that addresses mental health issues. Jason Sudeikis plays the program’s eponymous character, a likeable coach who seeks counselling after experiencing panic attacks.
On Sunday, the president tweeted a picture of a yellow sign with the word “BELIEVE” over the door of the Oval Office. The notice is evocative to the one that was posted over Lasso’s office door in the AFC Richmond locker room in the cartoon.
“The mental health-related information was just there. In 2021, Sudeikis told Us Weekly, “It’s been there forever, but it’s really come up a lot in just understanding where the characters were headed and how crucial it is to work on yourself to support your team. And I believe that in this enjoyable, goofy little comedy show, we were attempting to examine that, personify it in a way, and kind of lay a trap that there are greater issues.
People have really responded to that, Sudeikis continued, and “I get messages from people thanking them for really opening their eyes to what it means to go to therapy and what it means for someone in their own life to go to therapy and just speaking about these things and taking the stigma off of any form of health whether it be nutrition or mental, emotional health.” Sudeikis added that “people have really responded to that.”
The parent company of CNN, Warner Bros. Discovery, is the producer of “Ted Lasso”. When Biden asked the nation to “take on mental health” in his 2022 State of the Union speech, he made improving mental health a significant part of his “unity agenda.”
In this year’s State of the Union address, Biden also urged action on mental health, particularly for children. “We owe millions of young people greater access to mental health care in their schools when they are dealing with bullying, violence, and trauma.” The Biden administration has prioritised “training more clinicians, making care more affordable and accessible, and fostering healthier and safer communities, including online,” according to a White House official.
Nine out of ten Americans, according to a CNN and Kaiser Family Foundation survey conducted in 2022, think that there is a mental health crisis in the country. Celebrities have been used by the White House on various times to promote awareness of important issues, such as mental health. At a Mental Health Youth Action Forum organised by MTV at the White House last year, actress and singer Selena Gomez, who has openly discussed her own battles with bipolar disorder, shared a stage with the first lady. In a video with the president, first lady, and surgeon general Dr. Vivek Murthy, Gomez also discussed leveraging her platform to advance mental health awareness.
