Gabrielle Union reveals she had suicidal thoughts last year

The 48-year-old actress chatted with Gwyneth Paltrow during her In Goop Health virtual summit, where she spoke about her journey in mental health.
“I had so many difficult times as an adult, starting with rape at 19 at gunpoint at my job. I felt like every year there was a major catastrophic event going on in my life, ”Gabrielle said. via E! Gabrielle also spoke of being diagnosed with perimenopause, which marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years as she goes through menopause and can cause a wide range of symptoms associated with hormonal disruptions.
Gabrielle said she was first diagnosed in her 30s, but said “symptoms peaked” last September.
“I thought I was losing my mind,” Gabrielle explained. “I thought I had early-onset dementia, Alzheimer’s disease. I gained 20 pounds overnight from water retention, inflammation, weird. I couldn’t think. Now when I have to speak in public for the last few months, I’m so anxious, because I’m like, ‘Am I going to remember the words?’ “
Gabrielle then went on to say that she had recently been battling suicidal ideation.
“I’ve had more depressive episodes, but never for long periods. Maybe a few weeks, ”Gabrielle said. “I fell into something so dark in December it scared me. I had a stupid argument with D [husband Dwyane Wade], and instead of my usual problem-solving … immediately, my brain, that little inner voice said, “He’ll never get it unless you’re dead.” It was only because I have been in therapy for half of my life that I said to myself, “ No, I don’t know who is speaking now, it’s not my intuition. ”
Gabrielle went on to say that luckily the ideation was “fleeting” and that she was able to overcome thoughts.
“I was able to get by with talk therapy and how to regulate my hormones. Fortunately, I was home and alerted everyone, ”Gabrielle continued. “Separate the symptoms from who you really are… to say it’s a challenge, I don’t think I really have the words, or have lost them, to describe what the last few months have been like.
Several months ago, Gabrielle Union spoke about not receiving support from her black colleagues after she claimed work-related toxicity at NBC.
