In contrast to her “Black Panther” franchise character Queen Ramonda, Angela Bassett did not take home the gold at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday.
The losers, Hong Chau, Kerry Condon, Stephanie Hsu, and Bassett, were not immediately shut off by the cameras despite not seeming happy.
Curtis was shocked when presenters Ariana DeBose and Troy Kotsur called out her name during the ceremony when cameras were on all five nominees. She could be heard saying, “Aw, shut up.
As soon as Curtis was declared the winner, social media users noticed that Bassett did not cheer or grin, and some called the actress a “sore loser.”
More negative was another user who said, “I’ve lost all interest in Angela Bassett since she’s a bitter loser. Knowing that Angela Bassett’s reaction was hostile really makes me glad that Jamie Lee Curtis won! #Oscars.”
One person wrote on Twitter, “While Angela Bassett is a fantastic actor, she has a sore loser vibe. Women should encourage one another even when they are disappointed, especially during women’s history month.”
Despite the setback, Bassett still made history by becoming the first Marvel movie actor to receive an Oscar nomination.
Bassett’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” co-star Michael B. Jordan and “Ant-Man” actor Jonathan Majors appeared on stage shortly after Curtis’ victory to present the prize for outstanding cinematography.
Majors concluded, “We adore you. On social media, several people defended Bassett. One person tweeted, “I can’t believe people are this furious that Angela Bassett didn’t instantly celebrate her winning. didn’t give her a chance to even think about how disappointed she was. She rejected when I just assumed she would be a “you go girl” kind. Well done, she.
One more person choose to commend Her, writing, “Excellent for Angela Bassett not smiling or clapping. You expect Black women to not only be excellent but also to rejoice for others when they receive honours. Another individual had a different take on the viral response, writing, “I firmly believe Angela Bassett’s shock at not hearing her name mentioned was pure. It’s a good thing that I’m not the only one who thinks that way. I’m not the only one who thinks that way. Therefore I really hope people will stop criticising these two incredibly gifted actors.”
Both women received recognition during this year’s award season. While Curtis won the Screen Actors Guild Award, Bassett won the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actress.
The winners of the Oscars are chosen by Academy members.
